Question for the Garmin Autopilot Boys?

Contacted Garmin again this am. The tech I got today felt that my unit was an earlier model that may not have gotten the proper programing to handle the digital switching needed for the poco. They are sending me a newer model. We'll see how the new one works out.

... Second question, I’m out of network ports between the back of the units and my GMS10 switch. Couldn’t I just use a standand non Garmin switch to expand my network?

Sorry I didn't answer this question. The quick answer is no because Garmin is using non standard POE to turn things on and off. But if you use a POE blocker that might work. I am using a netgear switch for my Fusion radio and that switch is connected to the GMS 10 via a standard cable and POE blocker.

Sounds about right, please let us know how this works out. I am going to be joining you on this venture in the spring.

Thanks, trying not to add another GMS 10 if i can help it. Currently I've used up the ones on the back of the unit and the 4 on the current GMS 10. I've added the TD 50 to the forward stateroom for when we are at anchor. Being able to watch the wind and anchor alarm will be nice. Controlling the underwater lights would just be icing on the cake. Will be installing under the forward master tv console.

I am using an older Netgear version of the GS608, it's also 12v. I think it would probably work out for you if you don't put any Garmin equipment off of it that needs to be turned on/off like the radar or sonar. I am unsure about the MFD's if they look at that or not.

Yeah, I have a YD YDNR02 it's a wifi interface and has a web page for everything N2K that you can customize. I use that for turning the lights on/off and seeing what I left on. It is ran from a tablet that is also shared for Sonos and Fusion link. So it's not always right there like the TD-50 would be. My plan is to put that in the Salon/Galley area where I now keep a tablet. It would be mounted and always on so that makes it perfect.

Going back when we were trying to get Sirius artwork to display on the Garmin MFD's the breakthrough was to connect the Fusion radio to both the GMN and NMEA 2000. So, if the Fusion radio is removed from the GMI10 router and connected to a standard router/switch then connected to the GMI10 will it still provide the artwork to the MFD's??

Yes, that is how I have this connected, works fine. I also have my AXIS cameras connected that way, and they show up on my MFD's.

EDIT: I should add that I also have two ERX400's connected through that switch as well.

Same issue with the replacement unit. Looks like Garmin may or may not research and resolve unless enough users complain. Not sure it’s a common setup. Garmin phone support once again proved to be useless. Not a deal breaker for me but if you say it works it should work. Am now doubtful of any other one helm devices working on this unit.

@Irie308 There are a few things that Garmin claims to support and doesn't and when I opened tickets to get them fixed. They closed them and said their not going to fix and did not notify me at all. Mostly PGN's listed to be supported but they aren't.

The TD-50 looks half baked to me. The documents on it are incomplete at best. They show screen shots of digital switching but don't list those PGN's as being supported. A host of others as well. But since the Poco works on your main MFD, I have to think they will get to it in future FW releases.

Yup, fingers crossed but not holding my breath. The guys to talk to are the Garmin guys at the boat shows. They tell you one way or the other. For now I should be content with the functionality I have.

So final word is its an issue on the Lumitec side. Even thought the first tech i spoke to initially said it was supported. Lumitec confirmed yesterday that that they are reporting issues with the TD 50. No eta on a fix other than try any new firmware update to the poco as they are released. Just an fyi for anyone venturing down this route.

So just to confirm that the poco works fine on the 8600 series but not on the TD-50?

Also, when Garmin shipped you the new TD-50 was it a BlueNet version or the old GMN version?

Yes works fine on my 8600 and 1222 but not on the TD 50.

The replacement unit was just like my original. No “blue” port on the back. Just the 9 pin port and nmea of course.

Strange how they show the BlueNet on the website and state you need to use the BlueNet gateway to work with the GMN. Something isn't right there.

My understanding is that the 9 pin connection is blue net. They are going away from the Ethernet port directly on the unit. Similar to the raymarines you need a blue net to Ethernet adapter. Hoping to get to the NYC boat show in a couple of weeks. The Garmin guys should be there. Can get clarification.

Ok that is what I was asking. There isn't an adapter, but a gateway device ~$350. That will convert the GMN to BlueNet. That is probably what the issue is, as BlueNet and GMN aren't directly compatible.

I believe the TD 50 is GMN and NMEA 2000, not Bluenet. The RJ45 is GMN. There are two styles of GMN connectors - large and small. They make an adapter to convert between the two. The port that you may think is Bluenet is the NMEA2000 port. The attachment is the Garmin Bluenet Technical Reference -

@ttmott Tom, the only reference to any GMN is the BlueNet reference. The two connectors are the 5 Pin N2K port and the 9 Pin BlueNet port. That is referenced earlier in this thread also, but there isn't an RJ45 connector. Also mentioned above is the fact that their documentation on this product is lacking to the point it is useless, unlike other Garmin documentation.

Here is the current list of BlueNet products from Gamin
