It's sad when anyone dies, period. @SR400DB said it well though, at least that's how I feel. I live in the city and get excited when a criminal get's what they deserve.
Regarding "The thugs need to realize there may be immediate consequences" and "just think it's sad these thugs felt the need to steal" I don't see any thug thinking twice if they know the other party may have a gun. They are killing each other nightly in my city, probably over drugs and/or gang crap, and they know they all have guns. And I have absolutely no sympathy for "felt the need to steal"; it was a choice, we all have to make choices. I grew up dirt dirt dirt poor. Stealing was never one of my choices.
What's sad is the jewelry store guy will be investigated, and possibly charged.
