Zyrex bottom coatings

That's pretty amazing look if nothing else. It's super smooth. I can see reflections in the paint.

I'll be curious to see how it performs.

Doug

It appears with each coat to get smoother. I have heard people say that handling is enhanced and the boat appears to move easier. I know I can't wait to splash her but like I wrote I am going to continue painting her until all of the paint is gone. Last coat will sit at least 5 days to a week. I think that is for curring.

Ah crap...no one told me there was beer drinking involved in this project. Oh well...if I must......I must..... :)

Looks good. And I'd agree....I'll use it all up as well if I have any left after the 5 coats I was recommended.....IF...I ever get a chance to even get damn started. I don't recall being as damn frustrated with anything as I am with the freakin' weather and long range forecasts.

Appears others...in other threads are experiencing the same sort of crap in other areas too. You just know damn well if we didn't have something we all wanted to do that depends on good weather....we'd be having a glorious spring. "sigh"

Done!!! Fourth coat is on and in the books. Wow does it look good. Canvas goes up tomorrow. Wash and wax between the rain storms. Can't wait to splash. Those of you who are on the Chesapeake Bay and want to come take a look let me know. I still have to paint where the block are but that won't take long.
I'll post some more pics in a day or two.

270, keep up the good work,we're all watching to see what the out come is after a few mo,years, and how the boat performs, and if the is really any different in the handling,thanks....Rip

Good stuff there 270....glad you're done.

I've managed so far to get one side of my hull sanded....will be out today doing the other side. Hopefully start applying my Zyrex next week.

A word to the wise.....if anyone ever gets the urge to sand the bottom of a boat this size..or bigger...my recommendation is....

Find a big comfy chair.....park a box of beer beside it....and sit down and wait until that urge passes. I won't be doing it again anytime soon. Hopefully no need once the Zyrex is on.

I agree. I hope I never have to do this again or at least some 5 to 10 years out. Time will tell. However, if it is as good as it looks and I ever buy another boat I will use this bottom paint again.
As a side bar to this - I have talked via email to Steve and Michelle (Zyrex) 4 or 5 times for info and help. Very helpful all the time. I recently asked about the left over paint. Steve said it will last 10 years unmixed. That's good.

Hey Riptide - I hope I can see/feel the difference. I only ran the boat one time late last year (Oct). I pulled it in early Nov. My hope is that I will feel a difference compared to my 270 Sundancer. My plan is to launch her next Sat if the rain gives me a break so I can get some polish on her.

270......

got my sanding finished today...thank God I've got a good buddy who came over to help. unfortunately...forecast for the next 3 days here is more damn rain & rain & rain. GOOD GRIEF!!

What kind of rollers did you use? Presumably not foam correct?

Wool...or whatever the heck they're made of....with a short tight "nap"? Or???????

6 inch rollers all the way??

" Steve said it will last 10 years unmixed. That's good."

That's good to know.

Oh.....BTW.....I've heard Michelle say....and others....about how HARD this stuff is once it dries. Just out of curiosity.....what does it seem like to you? Is it similar to some sort of hard epoxy type coating? Or like a hard fibreglass resin type stuff or what?

Thanks.

Glad to hear you got the sanding finished. Make sure you acetone the bottom before you paint. I bought a cheap roller and with long extension to make that part go quicker.
Now for the rollers - Michelle sent, I paid for, 6inch rollers 1/2 inch in diameter. The first coat. Only mix enough for how long you are going to paint. If you only have a few hours of daylight and you won't finish don't mix the whole thing. Better to mix small batches at a time. Plus the first coat will take longer to put on. I am sure that is b/c it is the base coat and you have to fill in all the nooks and crannies. After that they go on much quicker and with less paint.
As for the rollers they are a tight nap and 6X1/2. I bought extras in Home Depot.
As for the hardness - Not sure yet. Today I went to the boat club after church. Wow was it smooth. It does feel like a very hard epoxy maybe even a hard fiberglass resin. Still not sure on that yet. I will say I have had a lot of people in our boat club come to look and feel my bottom. Boat bottom that is. lol.
I will now give it 7 days to cure. Then in the water she goes. I will say this if all goes well, I will have my 270 done as well.
Keep me posted on how you are doing. Any questions please PM me or go direct to Zyrex. Michelle and Steve have been great.

270, cannot wait till you feel the paint after 7 days. You will not believe it. Strap her down good. Please everyone, send rain our way, we are dryas a bone down here in central Texas.

I agree. I plan to let it sit until next Saturday May 7th. Some of it is b/c of the weather- still need to wash and wax. If it doesn't splash next Sat I may do it during the following week. I have put double lines on at my slip. Heard my boat my just take off due to the paint. LOL

DAMN RIGHT!!!!!!! :-(

Long range forecast is calling for more rain right through to next Monday for crying out loud.

All I can hope for is that forecasters around here are wrong so often....praying they'll be wrong now. LOL

Unbelievable.

Just discovered yesterday as a result of all the rain....I've got a little leak around the hatch above the dinette table. Must do something about that quickly.

Cut the lawn last night after work. Rain today and it is only 53 degrees. I think the high might be 60 degrees. I still have three spots to sand and paint where the blocks were. If this rain would only give me an hour or so each day I might be able to splash in another week.

Well what a surprise...latest forecast here has changed...now saying half decent for Thurs, Fri & Sat. Should be able to finish up the last little bit of sanding on the transom and get the minor repairs done on the hull bottom I want to do.....a bunch of chips and some fine gelcoat cracks. With any luck at all...may take a shot at coat #1. Getting kinda antsy here now. :)

Damn...just remembered....mandatory "work party" at our little yacht club all day Saturday. :-(

Sunday, Mon, & Tues...calling for guess what....rain, rain, and more rain. :-(

OV - I have three coats to do on my Jack stand and three support block areas. Next Saturday is "Splash-Day". Took today office for a Dr. visit and then to the boat for another coat. Another one on Saturday and then Monday night for the fourth and final. Of course as always = depending on the weather. Very cool here today.

Glad things are going well for you....you're way ahead of me. Weather forecast keeps improving here. I may be able to start applying my coating early next week.

Problem is.....in addition to weather not cooperating.......we re-do boat interiors. We're currently finishing up a 31' Silverton that I totally stripped out last October....and we worked all winter on totally reupholstering EVERYTHING....up and down on it. As soon as it's back in the water...I believe early next week....I have to go and start putting it all back together. Needless to say....my own stuff once again gets pushed to the back burner. And if that's not bad enough....yard work is falling way behind....damn grass is growing like crazy here with all the rain. And the ground is just too wet to get out with the tractor to try to get it all cut.

Just not enough daylight hours in a day.....or DECENT days in a week.

I'm going to try to get at doing my gelcoat repairs today...and finish up the last little bit of sanding I have to do on the transom. Then I should be all ready to wipe down with acetone first chance I get and begin applying my Zyrex.

Had a nice long chat with Steve at Zyrex the other day about how best to go about my gelcoat repairs. Seems like a very nice..and helpful guy.

270....how you making out? Get 'er done"?

With any luck at all I may be taking a shot at my first coat tomorrow. We've finally got the best 5 day forecast we've had all spring. Last little bit of sanding today on the gelcoat repairs I did and then the next step I guess is the acetone wipe down....and then....the tray and roller comes out I guess. Gonna try to do a coat every day then leave it sit for a week to cure while I finish up other stuff I have to do before splashing hopefully on or about the 20/21 weekend. My dock is in place and waiting for me now.

Gonna have to work like hell on that Silverton and make sure I leave myself enough time each day to get home to deal with my boat.
