Zyrex bottom coatings

Well 270...I guess we can sit back and pat ourselves on the shoulder now for a job well done. :)

BTW....guess what the long range forecast is for here.......solid rain for the next 6 days straight. Think I'll slap on the outdrive and my trim tabs today while the sun is still shining.

Now all we need is for this stuff to LAST....and PERFORM...as advertised. What I'm looking forward to most I think now is hopefully much easier cleaning at the end of the season....and hopefully.... NEVER having to paint the bottom of this thing again.

Time will tell.

Good luck with it.
The world, well at least CSR is waiting for the after season results of this new product.
They should have given you guys the paint for free being the "test boats".
Good luck,

AO'N - we are not the "test boats". Many have gone before us and some of them are on this site. Product has been around for almost 20 years and like most things in life we don't hear until we are looking. Wow that sounds deep.
I do agree with the end of the season results. I will pull my boat in the fall for a once over before putting it back in for the winter and keeping it down at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. Time will tell. Right now I am trying to get that 400EC washed, waxed and in the water.

I didnt know there were others...
Were they big boats in salt water?
I read the Zyrex web site and thought it quoted mostly fresh water smaller boats.
If its as good as hoped..I will coat my 400 next bottom job.

I hear ya about cleaning the 400EC is a waxing job and a half...
:)

"I didnt know there were others..."

There haven't been too many on this forum who have chimed in saying they used this stuff.

The thread was started by T'leah who has it...is quite pleased with it so far... and informed us all about this stuff....

Other than him..no one else...except now one or two others who are going to use it besides 'bio 270 and I.

I must say I'm a little puzzled by the company's marketing strategy....or lack there of.

From their website:

It has been tested on boats since 1994 in the Pacific, Atlantic, Golf, Great Lakes, and other fresh water lakes. It’s been applied to thousands of boat bottoms.

They don't really say much about boat size but they do reference it's use on 3 coasts..besides fresh water.

There seems to be such a lack of knowledge about Zyrex out there. If it's HALF as good as it's been reported to be....they're sitting on a gold mine in the boating community I would think. "shrug"

Anyway...the proof is in the pudding now I guess....we have it on our boats and hopefully those of us who have gone this route will be happy come fall and beyond.

Hopefully I'll never have to remove it....or re-do it but even if it only lasted me 2-3-4 years....it still cost me half of what all of West Marine's product line was going to cost me. So now we wait and see. "shrug"

I agree with OV but I thought there were others that had chimed in stating they had used it and like it. We do have a boat in our club that has it. Hasn't been painted in 5 years. Still looks and feels smooth.
If I only get 2,3,4 years out of it I will be more than happy but my feeling is I will get more. Compared to the other paints I have used or see in our marina I believe I will be good for a few years. Ok, I hope I will.

I am eagerly awaiting some performance data on the 400ec. I have another season's worth of paint on my bottom, but I am seriously contemplating this for my next winter project.

dyerdan - With a little bit of cooperation from the weather, my mechanic and my back I should be splashing her on Friday afternoon. Right now the bottom is slick looking (like a wet look) and shinny smooth. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time on the boat. I bought it last Oct. Shipped it from Key Largo (via Miami) to Annapolis, Md. We picked it up there and brought it up the bay. I rode and let my Father-in-law drive. He has 50 years of boat so it made sense to me. I did take it out one Saturday morning just in the river but couldn't tell you what it was doing or not doing. So, most of my data will be compared to the spec sheet for a 400EC with 7.4L and how it compares to my friend who has a 38ft. We are going to try and run at several speeds and do a slide test to see how far we slide. For as much wax/polish I have put on the sides if I roll it I should slide pretty well. LOL

270....hope you can get 'er done by the weekend. I just spoke with a hauler and discussed the possibility of getting mine in tomorrow evening. Waiting for him to confirm it's a go.

Don't know what's happening down your way but that nasty April weather is just hanging on here right through May. Thank God I got that few good days a week ago to get my Zyrex on. It has continued to be cold here and rain non stop ever since and the forecast is for more of the same....socked right in until at least Saturday. Unbelievable.

Yeah, we are in the same boat. Nice weather and then nothing but rain. I did get a few hours in last night playing karate Kid. Cleaner/Wax on Sunday and wax last night. Still need to wax the starboard side and then get the bird cr@p and black boot marks off of the top. Good news is I am so tired at night that after a few belts and some Advil I am out for the night. LOL

Good Luck, do you have data like RPM vs. MPH so you can make a before and after comaprison? It was my goal to get this recorded but the gail force winds over the weekend prevented me from doing it.

My 260 is on stands, the bottom is sanded and the first coat is on. I have a decent window to get two more in today and the last one on Sat morning. 1 week to wait, and the 2011 season is open.

"do you have data like RPM vs. MPH do you have data like RPM vs. MPH "

Sorry...I don't really have that. I bought my boat late last year and got virtually no use out of it and knew nothing about this bottom coating back then. So I never really logged any sort of data for comparison purposes. All I can say is that cruising on plane at 3000 RPM was giving me around 22-24 MPH last fall. Whether there's any difference in that now remains to be seen.

Good luck with your application...hope it all goes well for you.

Well...she's in and tied to my dock. First little jaunt of the season and I did notice something somewhat significant.

Firstly.......it's just a little early in the game for me to be TOTALLY convinced just yet....but this was not just wishful thinking either.

Last fall when I got the boat...during my couple of outings...I was just taking things easy...getting a feel for it...and trying to find the "happy spot" where it would plane nicely etc.

I ended up at 3000 RPM and approx 22-24 MPH on the speedo. Kinda about what I expected.

This morning....I took it up gradually onto plane and had it settle in very nicely at 2700 RPM and 25 MPH on the speedo. I didn't take it to 3000 to see what speed I'd get there.

This a result of the Zyrex???????? Dunno. "shrug"

But I did find it interesting.

Splashed yesterday around 4pm. Couldn't get any water fall from the starboard engine. Bird nest. So that is ok. Then the port engine as a knocking noise that it didn't have last fall when I got it. So the mechanic comes Monday.
Now for the Zyrex. After we took it out to blow out the bird nest as we came back in the guy helping me said ok slow it down. I was the gas throttles were all the way down and we were moving. I then took it out of gear and we just kept sliding along. I'll check it out next weekend after the mechanic looks at it.
Have good season.

WOW. It is not uncommon for me to run my boat from Green Bay to Door count WI and a short rum is about 2 hours. Based on OVs numbers here is the savings.
The boat will have traveled 8 more miles in the same amount of time at the same rpm vs. last year. I figure I get 1.75 miles per gallon (8/1.75) = 4.75 less Gallons times $4 = $ 16.29 each way times 2 ways = $36.57 round trip.
That is a nice meal at a restaurant, One night slip, bottle of Grey Goose, etc.

It kills me I couldnt test the boat before I painted the bottom. I have the forth and final coat on and I just need to wait for the cure window to close. It will be 5 full days to cure before it goes in. I will provide my non scientific seat of the pants view next weekend.

I have no idea what my MPG might have been with this boat. Wish I did.

I was actually a little surprised when I looked at the speedo yesterday after I got the tach settled right on 3000 RPM...pleasantly surprised. There was a little bit of chop yesterday....not much but a little. So the next time I'm out on real calm water I'll try it again to see what 3000 RPM gives me.

And one of these days I'll have to open her up to see what kind of top end I get. I've had her to 38 MPH last year...can't remember what the RPM was.

Have not heard from you guys with the Zyrex bottom coating in a couple of months.
There are many here who are wanting to hear more about the Zyrex. Is it doing what it advertised
to do? How do you like it? Any problems? Do you recommend it?
