Zyrex bottom coatings

Searaybio270,
That is awesome. I was hoping that the weather might cooperate with you. Cannot wait to hear how it goes. Remember to move the stands for the paint :).

I will print out 6 copies of your reply and tape them to each jack stand. Hopefully I will remember to do that. Can't believe I didn't see him not blasting those areas. Hey, come to think of it, how will I paint under the jack stand tops. I can move one at a time, paint, let dry and then do another. ??????????

LOL about the copies. This is how the boat yard did my boat. Paint the entire boat with 5 coats and let dry for 3 days (I cannot remember how long you wait between coats, ask Zyrex Steve). Put plastic (to help from slipping) on the stand pads, move them, and put same number of coats on the old stand spots. Let dry for 3 days and splash. The painting goes really fast. It seems dry after 24 hours, but is not. Wait three days and that paint will harden like you would not believe.

C'mon guys...you're killing me here. LOL

The way the weather goes around here....with the waiting time for that Zyrex to dry/cure....I'll be lucky to get into the water by freakin' June. :-(

Did manage to get the winter cover off on Sunday and all the canvas up so I can at least get inside now to do stuff untilthe weather improves so I can get at the external stuff. Just need Mother Nature to cooperate.

Hope your application goes well there SRbio 270

tleeah - between each coat of paint depending on the weather you need between two hours and 24 hours to dry. After the last coat Zyrex says to leave for 3 to 7 days, again based on temperatures, before splashing.
Old Vet - hang in there. for you Not Yet!!

"Old Vet - hang in there. for you Not Yet!! "

Nope...not yet. :-(

I'll have to amuse myself installing the new inverter and new TV I guess. Could put the outdrive back on to I guess but would prefer it's not in the way when doing my Zyrex.

Patience is a virtue they say right? Never been very virtuous. LOL

Good Luck Old Vet. Here's hoping to some good weather in your near future. At least you have some projects to complete on the boat.
SRbio270 Wait as long as you can close to seven days. Make sure it is nice and dry. By the way, let me know if you get any jump in your rpm. I did, but cannot tell if it was the zyrex, new stainless propeller, or both. The pitch only changed 1-2 degrees. I got a 500 rpm jump on top end (4200-4700).

Travis,
As much as I am itching to get her splashed I plan to do this one step at a time. I really want this to work and be right. I hope I see some appreciable speed and fuel savings, even if only a little bit. The big thing for me is I won't have to paint it next year. If all goes well I will have the bottom blasted on my 270 and have that one done as well. We have several people watching me to see the results. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Ok, yesterday I put the first coat on Zyrex paint on my boat. Well almost. I got started around 4:45 and worked until 8:15pm. I still have about a quarter of the bottom to do. At first I thought there isn't enough paint to do this 400EC but I believe with what I did last night that there is going to be enough.
The painting went well and spreads rather nicely. That first coat goes on very thin (per the directions) however as time goes on the paint in the paint tray begins to thicken. Here is were I would suggest not mixing very much of the Part A and Part B and pouring too much into the tray. The six inch by 1/2 inch in diameter roller makes for a long process. Be prepared for that task.
Overall, I like the way my partial first coat came out. I believe now that as the coats (4 of them) are applied it will become smoother and more rich looking than it does right now. And right now it looks Good.

How much did you mix at a time. I was thinking of mixing 1 gallon at a time but am now waiting to hear what your opinion is about how much to mix per coating

I believe I read in the Zyrex instructions to perhaps mix just a quart at a time. I think that's what I'm going to try at first when I do mine....a quart of each A & B......and see how far it goes. Then perhaps mix a bit more from then on if I can get it applied fast enough before it's starts hardening.

Pulling for ya there SRBio.......hope it goes real well for you. Keep us posted.

Pics are on their way. Pc at house is still down. I have pics of after sand blasting and first coat.

Wavedancer37 - I am sure Old Vet is correct about the amount to mix. Your boat isn't too much smaller than mine. I would mix a Quart of each A/B parts. It is a lot of work X4

It took me close to 4 hours to do what I did and I am not finished with the first coat. Ran out of day light. I would do one side and then do the other. After you finish one side take the same roller and go over that side again (rolling it) with out paint. This will smooth things out even more.

That is called back rolling when painting a house .

Headed to the boat this afternoon to finish the bottom providing it doesn't start raining again. Two things: I couldn't believe the touch already. Smooth. Not totally where it will be but smooth. I am more than ever convinced that this was a good idea and one that will last a long time. The other thing - it still smells. I got out of my car yesterday and the air was permeated with this smell of paint but not your typical paint. Wow! I'll let you know how the inside of the boat smells tonight. My wife already said, it better go away once you splash it.

SRbio......

A couple questions????

Back to the mixing quantity......do you have a feel for how big an area you can cover with a 1 qt (A)+ 1 qt (B) mix?

You have a 40 footer correct? Does that 2 qt mixture cover a quarter of the hull? More? Less?

How many gallons did you get in total?

I got 3 gallons for my 268.....5 coats to be applied.

I'm just curious/concerned....if this is going to be enough for 5 coats.

They recommended 5 coats for mine because I went with the blue color and it's apparently somewhat translucent.....so in order to get complete coverage and dark enough...they recommended 5 coats. I note you're only doing 4.....black I presume??

OV - My boat is a 400 and I will say that it is roughly 400sq ft of bottom. The first time I mixed about a gallon. Was enough but I didn't have enough time to finish. Six inch roller on 400sf is like forever. I tried to use the left over paint to finish last night. It had become thick and very difficult to work with. So I mixed about a quart (total) to finish the little over a 1/3 of the boat I had left. My recommendation on mixing not more than a quart of each, based on time. If you aren't going to use it all b/c of light the mix will thicken.
As for the amount. I bought 5 gallons and I can safely say it is enough. At first I thought I would have to order two more gallons. But it spreads very thin and that is why you mix up a little at a time unless you have help painting the bottom. You need five b/c of the blue color and I am doing black.
As I posted earlier - after one coat it looked ok and was rather smooth. Last night I had some paint left over and put the second coat on the stern below the swim platform and finished doing the starboard side just below the stripes. Wow! That was what I said when I stepped back to take a look. The black was starting to look like a deeper black.
As soon as I get out of work today I am headed to put on a full second coat. My father-in-law is coming to help. However, I will still mix small patches so I can avoid the thicken that the paint does. If the temp is between 50 to 60 degrees I think that is the best time to paint as the paint is easier to apply. Warmer weather is good as well especially if you have help.
keep us post. Pics coming soon. PC at the house is still down.
