As Steve said, Merrick is very residential and not a destination. The BYAC is nice and self contained, however It is surrounded by a residential neighborhood. The shops are along a main strip about a mile away, again not a destination just local shopping. It would work well for Alvin needing a place for little ones to burn off some energy. Further east but closer then FI is Lindenhurst [large Marine Max there] and also the Anchorage Yacht Club. They have a pool and restaurants nearby but not sure if they do transients... Joe would know as he slips there....
On FI, Atlantique, OB, Seaview & Kismet are all private and rent slips. Sailors Haven, Davis Park, & Watch Hill are all part of the Nat'l Park. substantially less expensive, however other then Watch Hill, no reservations taken. Lots of people anchor out and dingy to shore [day trippers only]
Steve, What about bayshore or the Patchogue river.? Not sure if enough there to entertain for more then a few hours.

Thanks all. I really did not mean to Hijack this thread with my own agenda here but I would like to Raft up but then head back to my transient slip. If that is all I am looking for the transient slip to do I think BWYC should be ok. FI would be awesome but I think with our short agenda closer west would also be better.

Bayshore and Patchogue are nice old towns but like you stated not much to do after a few hours. If your somewhere on Fire island, you have the beach, plenty of areas to explore with the dinghy, go claming, etc. As previously mentioned, many people will anchor off any of the marinas.

If you did venture further East to Sailors Haven and want an adult "entertaining" nite out, the next town east is the Pines which is primarily a gay and lesbian community with shops, restaurants, and a couple of nightclubs on the waterfront. Let me tell you, they know how to party and have a good time! They have several events each year (miss fire island contest and invasion of the pines)where these guys dress up in drag" I will say that some are more sexy than most women- just saying...... Great time and just keep the admiral close......

Steve and Ron, thanks for great and detailed info. It helps a lot for planning the future trips.

It sounds like if one doesn't want to pay top dollar staying overnight in those private marinas, the way to do it is to go near by and anchor near the desired place, like the local day boaters do and then head to one of the state marinas like WH, if you were able to reserve a slip.

Alvin, that's pretty much your best option. So, just follow this thread to be on top of things in regards to details for the raft.

If you were a Little but smaller I.would give you my skip for the weekend in.freeport but I barely fit... but fire island is just about an hour east of zacks and I will.b making a run to fire island right after the airshow. But again there's really nowhere to go interesting and worth while around here except fie Island and east

But wait I am wrong again I thought you had a 36 ft for some reason so that option is open if you like I won't b here so if your interested let me know I'll ask the owner if he minds. Not much to do around here but a quick boat ride to nautical mile and about 15 20 to zaks

Thanks for the offer, really appreciate it. But there are 2 of us coming. :) 2 boats that is. We will probaly stick with BWYC. Looking forward to meeting you guys at the raft up.

No problem hope to meet everybody that I've been bothering with my endless and sometimes stupid questions. But I'm just trying to get to know my boat better so thanks to all hope to c u there

Spikeitaudi, would you like me to add you to our list? If so, I'll post it on the first page.

So far accuweather has a great weekend set up high 70 low 80s. Is everybody still planning on going? :)

Do you really trust the weather man with forecasts so far in advance?

Hey guys, if you're participating in the raft let's make the organizing a bit easier and give Joe some basic info (specially if other non-CSR boats are attending). I guess something like Captain's Name, CSR User Name and Boat Name and Model for each boat should do it. For those who's not on CSR leave the user name blank.

So far we have:

Joe, "Havana Shamrock", "TBD", 360DB............Joe, I don't know if you're keeping the same name for the boat.
Ron, "rcmafgny", "Knot For Sail", 260DA
Greg, "Greg", "Lady TAZ", 480DB
Alex, "Alex F", "Inspiration", 420DB
Brian, "bmac", "Endless Love", 44DB
Vince, "Vince_nj1", "Ryker Bella", 320DA
TBD, "Xplicitlnck", TBD, TBD

TBD, "Dasch Boat", TBD, TBD
Alvin, "Spikeitaudi", "TBD", 240DA...need info for another boat

Wow this is turning out to be quite the raft-up. Ben will also be there with us.

Ben, "Ben Diss", "Knot Flyin", Formula 400ss

I think that it may be a good idea to exchange a few phone numbers as well, it's not always easy to raise someone on the radio. This way we can find each other when we get there. I plan on getting there Saturday morning.

As for the weather, it IS going to be sunny and in the 80's. I just read it on the internet, so it must be true.

Helping out Joe here...

Good idea, Greg. I have most of the numbers. If anyone need mine, please PM me.

Yes sir, that's the forecast I'm going with.

Joe,

I think it's good idea to place this on the first page as well.

VHF Communication:
72 - primary channel to communicate with the group.
69 - backup channel if we get too much noise on 72.
16 - is always on. This will be the channel to use in case if we don't get respons on 72 or 69. Once the communication is established with a vessel we'll ask to switch to 72 or 69, whichever will be the better option at the time.
