Yearly Quicksilver Generator Starting Problems

For the third year in a row I am having trouble getting my Quicksilver 7.5k started. Unlike the previous years that required me to replace fuel pump, govenor, distributer, carb, fuel filter and plugs because of either no spark or overspeed and shutdown issues. This year it started up, ran for about 2 minutes and then shutdown. Now I can't get it started. I hold the start/stop button and it turns over, sounds like it wants to start and then shuts down (even if I am still holding the switch to start). It will not continue to crank unless I let go and push again.

Lucky for me I have spare parts (control board included) but I am lost to why this happens every year after sitting for a few months. We use the genny often and runs all year long without issue and then after layup, nothing.

My first step was going to check fuel again and sensor switches, any thoughts?

Don't ask me why but I keep getting this vision of condensation inside the distributor cap....

Well I got it going, I was having the same problem as last year with the governor arm. It wouldn't old the resistance. I checked the oil level in there and it was low, filled it up, tried to start it and fired right up. Ran it for over an hour.

Mike
Please elaborate. Pls explain the "governor arm" and it's oil. Is it motor oil in there?

Also, where did you get your ignition components for replacement (cap, rotor, points, condensor)?

I have the 6.5kw version of your genny.

Thanks!

It actually isn't a sensor, there is nothing electrical on the governor. What I think happens is there are two fly-weights inside and my guess is that with sitting all winter they probably get stuck in a position (especially if the oil is low) and until the oil lubricates it again it doesnt balance and maintain the engine at the right rpm's.

Rondds - check this website out, it has helped me alot.

Yes, all you do is pour motor oil into the govenor assembly. The governor stops the engine from overspeed and maintains rpm's. On my genny the alternator is attached and the belt spins it. The link above expalins and shows it well.

I have used the following places for parts:

http://www.marinespecialists.com/

www.partsfortechs.com (talk with Dennis, he is very helpful and will discuss over the phone)

Great info! Thanks!
That first link didn't work but I found the manual. I actually have that manual printed out. Did you order the ignition components from Partsfortechs? I just installed the distr cap and rotor from them, but I was concerned b/c they are not identical in height to the nissan stuff I took out. So the pessimist in me says it ain't gonna start this spring (boat is still on land so I haven't tried it yet). I ordered the points and condensor from a generac dealer (Kelly Generator in Maryland). Their prices for these components were in line with the aftermarket stuff from partsfortechs.

I also have the original Operations and Maintenance Manual, which covers the QS-4.0G, 6.5G (mine) and the 8.0G. Does your 7.5kw use the 987cc (1.0L) Nissan or the 1.2L Nissan??

BTW, Marine Specialists were OFF THE WALL on their pricing. For example, they wanted over $141 for the distributor cap (OEM). Kelly and another outfit here in NJ (Warshauer Electric) get $111 for the same OEM Cap. I quickly made a note to myself to avoid them.
Kelly stocks all this stuff and they're in Owings Maryland.

PS: a long time ago I kept a boat at Bowley's Quarters Marina.

Rondds,

I did get my ignition parts from partsfortechs, I have spare board, cap, rotor, coil. I have only used marine specialist once for an oil sensor and the heat manifold sensor. which turns out to be a sensor you can get at Home Depot for a water heater at home.

I've also talke dto the guys at Kelly but weren't much help to me over the phone like Dennis was with me, he must have spent at least 45 minutes with me.

We are located in Frog Mortor Creek at Parkside Marina, been there for three years.

I have no idea if my engine is 1.0L or 1.2L, next time while I'm at the boat I will look.

You won't find any markings to tell you the displacement. You'd only know if you have the owner's manual. I just figured you either knew already OR one of the guys you dealt with told you. I'm guessing you have the 1.2 liter. Just a FYI - you can buy spark plug wires from any auto parts store - just tell them you need for a 1986 Pulsar.

The people at Kelly were good but I called with Generac part numbers so they really didn't have to do much. The did have all the stuff in stock and I got it in a day. Merciless with the shipping charges, though.

So you had no problems with the aftermarket ignition stuff??

No problems. Do you have a sound shield around yours? They are very quiet but i was still thinking of building one. Maybe just doubling up the sound proofing on the underside of the deck.

No sound shield on mine. Hving 4 cylinders keeps the rattle down. I'd probably lean more towards soundproofing the deck than building a box around it. I think gennys with soundshields are engineered for that - I would think you'd have to watch operating temps if you are enclosing a unit like the one we have.

I am have a problem with my quicksilver 6.5 generator, which is very troubling and wanted to know if anyone as experience the same issue.
The generator starts and will run anywhere form 20 seconds to 45 minutes and then dies. It will start right way but does the same thing again and again. All the sensors have either been check or replaced, all the oil levels and fluids are fine as well. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It must be something in the air because I'm having the same problem with mine.:smt089

I'll let you know if I get anywhere with it

I order the manual for Gernerac who was the maker of the generator since my mechanic is at a loss without it. Will let you know what the end result is.
In addition, I found a great source for parts Huntington Power in Shelton Ct. 203-929-3203, Russ in the parts department is great.
