I have a 1986 250 sundancer with the 5.7. Wen't to start it today and I noticed that it would not turn over and I could not trim the engine up. The pushbutton swith to trailer the trim would work though to raise the trim. Any ideas?

I would check the obvious first..... sorry if these seem stupid, but I have missed these before. #1. Check battery, one battery is probably the culprit #2. Battery Switch On? (If equipped) #3 Safety harness switch (if equipped) in running position? #4 Throttle in neutral?

Let us know what happens or if we need to start digging deeper.

Mike

Thanks Mike, but I don't think it's going to be that easy. Don't have time to check on it today as I have to leave for work shortly. Tomorrow I'll check all of the connections and check for voltage. Something tells me that there is going to be an issue withing the throttle control as the trim switch is located there.

Hey, I've been cleaning and testing and now I think that it might be the solenoid on the starter. Can the solenoid be checked and replaced or do you have to get a new starter?

I just jumped the solenoid and the starter will click but will not turn the engine over. Bad starter? What about the neutral safety switch?

The voltage is OKs. Checked the neutral safety switch and it's ok as well. Gotta be the starter, Thanks for the help Mike.

Can you rotate the starter a partial turn? My brother had the same problem and his starter had a flat spot on it. In other words, if it stopped on the same spot it would not start. If he rotated the starter manually, it would start. PITA, but at least he was not stuck until he had the starter rebuilt.

have you tried to turn the motor by hand (pull on the belt) ??

I also went out and took hold of the crank shaft pulley and I got it to turn a little.

Try the old GM starter trick, hit it with a hammer, then start it up. Used to do this to my Blazer all the time till I replaced.
