Well, since there's at least another 100 days or so until launch, all I keep doing is going over in my head stupid things to do to the boat. Anyone else suffering from this?

Anyhow, we have our anchor (danforth-type) hanging out at the front tip of the boat. And it is ugly. Matte steel I guess.
Has anyone had their anchor plastic/rubber coated like the white chain anchor rode? Painted their anchor? Had it dipped in melted platinum for more bling?
I guess aside from being unnessesary and possibly expensive, would it prevent the anchor from biting in the sand / mud?

Thoughts, opinions, whatever?
Thanks,
Keith

Wouldn't any applied coating get messed up over time? May depend on the sea floor where you anchor.

I have seen highly polished anchors that look pretty nice. I'm not sure if they are polished stainless, or chrome plated. Diamond studded would look sweet!

I am having mine sprayed with Line-X in a few weeks. I'll post pics when I get it back. Same style anchor as you.

I'm also getting the bow roller assembly sprayed.

I anchor in mud and muck, so it should hold up just fine.

I really wish you could paint the bottom with Rhino or Line-X. NO MORE BOTTOM PAINTING!

I would think powdercoating would be the way to go. If you don't know of one in your area, check with a couple motorcycle shops - they are ALWAYS getting powdercoating done.

I think the powdercoating would be best because it actually bonds with the metal vs just adhering to it. I know stuff I've had done before is basically indestructible, so I think it would hold-up to anything it encounters on the sea floor.

I power wash and paint mine white with some high quality spray paint a few times a season...looks lots better.

I have a Danforth style as well.

It's undersized and I will use it as a stern anchor, when needed. I think the polished stainless look best in the Bruce style, but they're not Cheap. I also was advised not to leave the anchor on my bow roller, because I trailer the boat. I am told as I float off the trailer the bow tends to dip down, catching it.
One more thing to look at at the boat show.

I don't like the galvanized look much either but since whatever I get will be in the Anchor locker, I'm not sure I care what it looks like.

I don't know if LineX or Rhino would come off in sand or mud, more than likely not, but in our area there's rocky bottoms and I'm certain it would chew whatever paint dipping or coating there was besides galvanizing off. Powder coating can and will scratch as well, it's not intended for this application. It's tough for most things but dragging on rocks, and gravely bottom will take it's toll. Maybe consider having it galvanized dipped or buy a galvanized anchor if your's is not already.

I had mine powder-coated 7 years ago. I was warned that it may scratch, but for $70, it seemed like a worthwhile gamble.

There's still not a scratch on it, so I'm happy.

It looks good and has been plenty durable, but the chrome ones look SO much better...

It's an anchor not a decoration. Ours is set in everything from sand and mud to rock and gravel. Having a painted anchor will mark you as a skipper who never anchors out....not that there is anything wrong with that.

Well, it might not be meant as a decoration, but it is dangling off the front of my baby which is all shiny and clean...

My aft anchor is painted flouresent orange. It makes is easy to see in shallow water, saving the toes of waders. I used a can of landscape marking paint, that I had hanging around. It scratches pretty easily but I touch it up a couple times a season.

Now a orange anchor hanging off the bow roller would be interesting. I'm not ready to try it.

How about keeping the anchor out of sight until you are ready to use it, and then shackle it to the rode? Maybe you could fasten a figurehead to the bow for decoration. . . .

Your nose isn't decoration either but you wouldn't want a big ole' Zit on it would you?:wow:

Just having a little fun:thumbsup:

Stainless Steel Anchor:

Definately an expense I would personally put on the bottom of the priority list.

IMO painting an anchor is not only a cosmetic issue. Smooth paint makes it harder for things like mud to stick. It's also easier to find the anchor on the bottom if you dive down to check its lay, or if it gets fouled and you need to go down and get it.

Yes. My 26 foot SR Express had one of these because it protected the gel coat from chipping. The Danfort anchor and about 6' of chain was dipped. That anchor absolutely refused to set no matter what. Not a good idea.
