Which gasser is best

So... we find a diesel boat that has been neglected and that leads us to the conclusion that diesels are bad...

Very good...

Find a gas boat that's been neglected... maybe one that's been run WOT throttle all the time, stored on blocks in the winter and pressure washed every weekend.

A lot of good points have been made. Gassers are definitely cheaper by a lot in every category, except fuel economy and longevity when properly maintained.

If you really know how to investigate a diesel, or know someone you trust that does, you will be ahead of the game. But endeing up with a gasser that needs work is a fraction of the cost of ending up with a diesel that needs work.

As far as fuel economy, expect at least 25% better with diesel.

Others have mentioned the benefits of explosion and CO.

There is also the intangible of the linear torque curve, and the fact that diesels are happier under heavy load than a gasser. They just "feel" better IMO.

Putting it in layman's terms...

Diesel = dating a Victoria's Secret model
Gas = farm animal

The farm animal is cheaper... so I'm told.

But make sure you get one that does not smoke or stink! My bad just could not pass that up!

Is this the Toyota thread? Starting to read like it or is it starting to read more and more like an Obama thread. :smt043:smt043:smt043

Innuendo and not actual facts and comments about a persons possible available resources commented on, but just more blather like the media today espouses. :smt013

Hey I know just get the gov-mint to give everyone a free boat.

But you know from my perspective not everyone has the same pocket book as some and they try to get into boating with what they can afford, whether it be gas or diesel.

I know I would not mind moving to a diesel boat one day, but current finances prohibit that...Of course I am from a different generation, which was raised learning something about personal responsibility and fiscal reality. :wow:

:smt100I know maybe I can stand at a slip somewhere holding a sign which states will work for a boat, or one which states hey I need a TARP :smt013 bailout so I can buy a boat.

So if you have read this far how about we not turn this into another gas versus diesel bashing thread?

Thanks

Why do you turn everything into a political rant? The only use of the word "economy" was fuel economy...

Not sure this analogy is quite accurate. Most of us, including you, wouldn't last a New York minute with a Victoria Secret Model but with a farm animal it could be years. So isn't one of the primary advantages of a diesel over a gasser is it lasts longer before needing an overhaul??:smt043

Anyone hear from the OP?? Scared off in all liklihood.

I don’t know Bob, did you see the pictures of that “mistress” of John Edwards…. Damn!

Yeah, but I would have prefered her in Oshkosh Begosh coveralls since she grew up on a horse farm and rode them like am sure like she rode him in the video!:wow: BTW, aren't horses considered farm animals?:smt043

Hi Guys,
snip

I have not completely given up on the diesel powered Carver, but I have some time to decide and I want to use this time wisely.

Thanks guys,
Tim

Lots of rhetoric, hmmm?
You're in Tampa. You have 3 kinds of boating to do.
1. Run to a restaurant or the local sandbar
2. Make a trip to Venice or even Cabbage for a weekend to a week
3. Go to the Bahamas for a month or two.

Figure out which one you'll do more of, and that will answer your question.
Friends go to the Bahamas for a few months every year. they run diesel battle wagons. No bay trips, and rarely leave the slip for less than a week at a time.
I do 1 mostly, and 2 occasionally. Gas is fine. If you're going to offshore fish, get a different boat.
My humble 2 cents after being on these waters for 50 years.

Best advice, yet. If you're set on this particular type of boat, the type of use will dictate which engine is best. The worst thing you can do for a diesel is not to run it enough.
