between an Express Cruiser and a Sundancer
is it cabin layout ??

sundancer vs. express cruiser or sundancer vs. weekender? I know the big difference between the sundancer and weekender is the weekender does not have the rear mid-cabin, which also means the cockpit floor does not have the raised area at the helm and therefore the seating arrangement is different, other then that the boats are for the most part identical. (I'm speaking purely about the 80's boats....not sure on newer models) I do beleive the express cruisers are a different boat, but seeing as I've never looked at anything that closely over 34' I'm probably wrong on that.....and once again I reply to a thread with no actual answer to the original question:lol:

got a weekender and know the difference between it and a dancer
I've been seeing ECs as short as 30' advertised that look like DAs in the exterior pics

I'm a noob and not all that knowledgeable so take this for what its worth, but I've always been under the impression that a Sundancer IS an express cruiser. In other words an express cruiser is a class of boat, not so much a model (i.e. sundancer)

Agreed.

The Express has no aft cabin and its a unique model to it self. It's uses the same hull as the Weekender and is a mid engine boat but, has a bit more head room, at least as far as a late '70's model goes. I'm sure there are more differences...

I think the term "Express" is loosely used but Sea Ray has distinct models titled as Sundancer and Express Cruiser. In the Sea Ray brand the difference in the two are mostly:

Sundancer has an Aft Cabin and the Express will sneak a second state room forward. This leads to a larger and more open cockpit on the Express. This also lends to the Sundancer's larger and truly more open cabin.

Sundancer has V- Drive propulsion and an Express is a Straight Drive. This provides a better balanced boat in the Express due to mid mounted engines and some people prefer the Express ride performance.

There are several other differences but those are the main.

Generally speaking, a Sundancer will have engine (s) positioned in a way that allows for cabin accommodations under the helm area, which would be otherwise occupied by engines in a straight-shaft layout. This is accomplished with the use of V-drive transmissions, Zeus, I/O or surface drives.

In SeaRay speak, "Express Cruiser" denotes a straight-shaft layout, without a mid-cabin.

To the general public, an "Express" refers to the look and layout of boat with a more-or-less helm-level cockpit, and a single level cabin below with few or no above-deck windows. SeaRay's Sundancers, Express Cruisers, Weekenders, Sunsports and some of the Amberjacks fit this category.

Huh... learn something new everyday! I guess this is another case of the "brand name" becoming colloquial for all subsequent items of similar function.

I saw what was advertised as a 400EC with twin 454 and outdrives
is this possible since the EC is supposed to be straight drives ??
