What causes you the most anxiety while on the water under power?

There actually IS A ZEN THING going on.

Some find it comes naturally and others never "get" it.

Owned motorcycles in my 20's and in my 40's.

Required reading in college ENG 101, Professor Loberger - ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE by Robert Persig

HOLY CRAP - that was 1975 and I remember the book title, author and the teacher's name ?

Anyhow the first 80% of that book is great, the last bit goes off the rails. Came across a used copy as an adult some 25 years ago, read it AGAIN.

Yeah, there IS a Zen to it.

So glad I found it.

Hope y'all do too !

BEST !

Zen is a good word for it.

SeaRay docking but I was once told all boats come with training paint. Jetboat getting stuck on sand bar far from nearest place people are. Once got stuck on sand bar 91 miles from help SAR came next day and got us off. We have to eclectic winches on boat and they did not help. Now we have a 7,000 pound block and tackle. last year we were in .7 feet water for a few seconds 100 miles from nearest community north of the Artic circle. Boat stress is not real stress it is something you get to talk about in the winter.

I never really had any stress on the river. I was very familiar with the river, channels, channel markers, etc. Even going through the locks didn't stress me out. My wife was an excellent deck hand so I never had to worry about whether she was doing something right.

The one time my pucker factor maxed out was going into a marina I'd been into before, but this time my port engine would not come out of gear. (Google "The Dalles, OR marina")

To get into that marina you had to enter off the Columbia River, make an immediate turn to port, then a turn to stbd then back the boat to port around the end of the dock you are going to tie to.

It's a difficult marina to get into when you have both engines operating normally. When you have one engine that won't come out of gear the pucker factor is off the scale.

That first cold beer sure tasted good. As did the next several!

Losing one of my engines while docking. It's already happened to me twice.

If you know you're coming in on one engine, you can adjust your strategy, but if you think you have two engines and one dies, you're often in the wrong position and have to work very hard to avoid hitting something.

Lately the depth finder has not been working and lake levels are low, so hitting something underwater is also a concern

Coming in and going out of several of the Fl inlets. I've resolved to time as best as possible slack tide. It's not only the weather and tide but the lunatics going in and out especially those dog pecker gnats (jet skis) that have no idea what they are doing.

I find pontoon boats, a.k.a. moron barges to be the dumbest thing on the water. Even worse than most jetskis

Water.

Having an exhaust hose fail on an inboard will quickly fill up that engine room.

Same thing if a raw water AC hose fails.

I added a BOREL exhaust alarm, for many reasons. 3 zones, two engines and one on the genny.

I've also added a 3 section bilge counter to the boat to record the engine room bilge pump cycles fwd bilge, aft bilge and aft emergency bilge.

When I'm away, the salon SIMPLISAFE camera is focused on it.

SIMPLISAFE water sensors in all 3 bilges

SIMPLISAFE cameras in the engine room - focused on the bilges.

This way I can check the boat remotely (photo below)

Maybe I'm anal about the boat, however my fear is a total loss.

In the event of a total loss, doubtful I could not replace her in the same condition AND with all her improvements/upgrades for the insured value.

I feel that last part. I think I’m insured high and I would still take a bath, let alone all my labor

My wife likes to stream music from her phone when underway. And watch videos on her phone (stop me if know where I'm headed). Well, occasionally a song or video will come across the speakers that has background sounds like a beeping or a siren or something. Because of the engine noise, these sounds are not super clear. But they go right up my spine, as I'm thinking "engine alarm", blige alert, over temp alarm, etc. Beeps and warning sounds give me anxiety...

Those unexpected beeps and sirens can be nerve-wracking, especially with the engine noise in the background. It's amazing how our brains can instantly jump to "engine alarm" mode.
