I got a call from Mr. Sea Ray Friday afternoon letting me know he was in my neck of the woods transporting a 510 from Merritt Island to Miami and wanting to tie up at my house. After a great dinner Friday evening with Rusty and his co-captain, Shelby from the customer service department who was riding along, we were asked if we wanted to accompany them to Ft. Lauderdale the next day. Obviously, that was a no brainer! So 730 Saturday morning we boarded the boat with some coffee and donuts.

When I got on board I was surprised to hear "alright captain, I'll be drinking my coffee. Get her ready to leave". Although I was a bit intimidated, by being given the opportunity to figure it out, I learned a ton in the first 10 minutes. Once the diesels were purring and the generator powering the essentials, he said "I've got lines, let me know when you're ready". So with a little bump of the thrusters (which I really fell in love with on this trip), we were off. The plan was to take the intracoastal to Palm Beach and then take the outside to Lauderdale. The trip down was uneventful other than Rusty yelling at me every 8 seconds for going too fast in the no wake zones. It was a delicate balancing act of having him tell me how bored he was of going so slow one minute, then slapping me in the head for going too fast the next! Lol.

Here's the takeaways from the journey. Something I already knew, our friend Rusty is one frickin smart man! Every time I'm around him I learn so much. Shelby from customer service really cares and has a genuine interest in what customers think. The 510 is an amazing boat and is in my radar for a 5-7 year out boat. From the Hillsborough inlet to Lauderdale, we were in 5+' seas with a 3-5 second interval. It was like a washing machine and that boat handled those seas amazingly. I was also able to dock her in the pitch dark in Lauderdale and that's where I fell in love with the thrusters!!

So, besides the constant barrage of hand slaps for my heavy throttle hand, a few technical difficulties and that one rouge wave where I stuffed the bow and took about 600 gallons of water over the boat (most of which landed on Shelby and Heather who were sitting out back;), it was an amazing experience. Rusty IS the reason I'm still a SR owner as I was looking to stray when he steered me to the Laguna. He's also the reason I intend to remain loyal to the brand and am now hooked on getting a 510!! Thanks you, ya crusted old captain for another great experience and for all you do for the SR owners and brand.

P.S., sorry there isn't more boat pics. Hard to get them from the helm and I was only away from it to pee!

Shaun, you're really starting to tick me off! While YOU were piloting a beautiful, big Sea Ray down the Intracoastal and on to Fort Lauderdale, WE were shoveling snow, while doing it in a constant drizzle of freezing rain.

Oh - we did see Fort Lauderdale ourselves, though. . . On all of the several live web cams located along the ICW/Beach/Hotels.

Too much ;-) All kidding aside (except for the live web cams part - I got them bookmarked on my phone, too), that is awesome that you are truly 'Lucky' to be enjoying that all. Good for you guys!!

But remember, we are only a few months behind ya, as we are still working towards our fall, 2014 timeline for getting our sorry butts down to the Sunshine State and p***ing off the rest of 'em still stuck up north :)

Later, Lucky!

Can't wait to have you down here. It was 88 today, in case you were wondering. It's amazing how busy we stay considering we moved down here knowing nobody. We barely have anytime to "relax". Lol

Wow.
Shaun, thanks so much for posting. Yet another great Sea Ray story.
Can you give a little more trip detail like how long of a trip it was, time & miles. How did you get back, stuff like that.
Rusty, thanks for being, well, Rusty.

Thanks again guys.

Certainly. The trip was about 95 miles. We left at 8am and docked in Ft. Lauderdale around 6pm. Trip could have been quicker but we had to stay on the intracoastal longer than originally planned due to rough conditions. It was a spur of the moment decision so there wasn't a ton of planning on out part, but after dinner we ended up catching a cab from the marina to the Ft. Lauderdale airport and rented a car. We drove that back to the house last night and this morning returned it to the local enterprise place. Also worth noting, prior to this trip we had briefly met Shelby from customer service twice. Heather and her didn't stop talking except to take a breath the entire trip! On a couple occasions I marveled in how there could possibly ever be THAT much to talk about!! Lol

Why doesn't Rusty deliver up the East coast, NORTH!!!! So we can tag along? Nice story you guys are living a dream down there!!!

Couple more shots that were sent to me this morning.

Merry Christmas to you as well!! As far as the career change, as I tell my wife....expect the unexpected!!

I may have whispered a required speed adjustment, once or twice (as did the local authorities via loud equipment) but rouge wave, naaaah, routine mate. Was glad to have Heather on board as always and enjoyed you learning the Florida waterways. It is not easy traversing the ICW in Florida and you did an outstanding job quickly accumulating yourself to our wet streets. There are many. Taking it for granted after doing it once or twice I forget to realize all the instant variables that DO arise......
-No wake zones, everywhere and more so in the winter months for manatee movement.
-Clear water that goes from 20 to 2 feet in less than a boats length
-ALL kind of water craft (and even more different types each year) popping up in a moments notice.I am moving a three foot wave at cruise and and a not so smart canoe in the channel (that's right) is a whoa factor of 10+
-New boat (seatrail) cruise is not often a trip where you kick back and relax but instead are monitoring systems constantly for break-in concerns.
-Boat must arrive pristine and 110% a Sea Ray boat ready to go....with Shaun's help, this cool and beautiful 510 Sundancer, did just that!

The Lad went from swabby, to mate, to a boat driver all in one real deal, East Coast ICW/ Atlantic Ocean trip....looking forward to us all doing this in the future.

Joe, I am bringing a new Meridian 441 from St. Pete to Charleston the day after Christmas... 'bout 6 day trip through Lake Okeechobee.

"gofirstclass".......you do know the Sea Ray guys.

Thanks again Heather for letting Shaun hang with the crusted old captain for the short trip, wish you could have stayed with us longer.....okay, thanks for your help Shaun, I'm just not letting anyone else know, Rrrrrr !

I'm sure we can find a nice winter home for you here, Rick. :)

Hell, all he needs is an internet connection, right?

Great pictures! Warms me up a bit here, while its -25 C and I have to go knock the snow and ice off the boat cover this afternoon.
