After spending $2k in parts for my 4.5 BCGB, I gave up trying to fix it, and bought a new low profile 5 KW. Bottom line is I expect to get my old genny back next week or the week after, and part it out.... If you need any parts I will give a good deal... Some parts are new. It is off an '01 340 DA. Starter, fuel pump, governor, carburetor, belts, etc all work... The mechanic thinks I bent the valves after setting the timing wrong...

Valves are fixable. Do you want me to try?

That's a generous offer from Frank, and I know he has been through his and knows them well. If you don't go that route, pm me, I might know someone who would buy it as is.

Oh, I did Rod's disassembly with him and walked him though what he would need to do for reassembly. But, I didn't have time to help putting it together. If he did it a few weeks earlier or later, but he did it when I was overloaded.

That said, I don't think the parts are as valuable as the entire generator. You can part out stuff like the governor & overspeed board, but not a lot of calls for c-rods and pistons. The overspeed, btw, is grossly overpriced. The "functional" part of the overspeed regulation is a National Semicondutor LM2917N-8 frequency to voltage converter. Cost? $2.11 quantity one. They use a 2N7008 N channel MOSFET to drive the shutdown relay. The rest are simple discrete components, diodes, resistors and capacitors, which probably would be overpriced if you pay a dollar.

Doing the valves should be easy. Don't have to do a full-tear down to do a top end job. It's a bit of a pain because you have to reset the mechanical lifters once the engine is hot, but that's not an insurmountable problem.

Best regards,
Frank

Not to get off of Rod's thread, but...

All of us have many things that we enjoy about boating. One item that I am reminded of each day on this Forum is the willingness to provide help to fellow boaters.

Frank, thanks to guys (and gals - I can't forget Spookeay) like you offering not only good advice and counsel, but "hands on" help as well, this sport is even more enjoyable - and one could say more "affordable".

I probably have violated Forum ettiquite by "thread creep" here, so to the forum police, I apologize. I'm just very impressed by what people do for each other here.

And Rod - thanks for the MMA info. Looking forward to meeting more Forum members at AC in July.

Frank, Thanks for the offer... I gave the Marina a check for just under $7K for the new genny yesterday... In my rush to reassemble the genny, and get it back on the boat, I set the timing wrong, and tried to start the genny... Then, pulled it back out and reset the timing with procedure from the manual... I ended up buying a new coil for $360, and got to the point where I just wanted it fixed... I had other work that needed to be done, so I brought it to a Marina... When I received the bad news on Thursday, that at a mini mun, I needed a valve job, I decided to cut my losses, an buy a new 5 KW genny... Now I just want the boat back and and would be happy to sell the old genny as is or part it out... It maybe be easy to get it running, but I am too impatient. One of many flaws... Frank, thank you for your help and advise... I learned a lot and, I can pull a genny out and put it back in my boat in less than 2 hours. As a reminder to all, don't attach a garden hose to your generator and try to start it after the water was running...

If anyone is interested in buying my 4.5 KW Westerbeke BCGB, as is, PM me... I don't know what it is worth, but I would take a fair offer.... PM me if itereseted... I plan to put it on Craigslist next week...
