Wax Recommendation

HiFi, I called Zaino today and asked what they recommend for my white 92' hull. I told them I was going to use presta ultra cut to "restore". They recommended All in One then Z5. Sound about right? I saw you polish then wash off, they said it wasn't needed. YOu agreee? Good post I apprectiated it. I have been have trouble keeping top sides looking good througout the season so I thought I would try something different. thanks Rob

This is a tough one for me to answer as I do not know how oxidized/contaminated your gel is now.

I will never use an all in one anything so I would have to say no to the specific recommendation.

You can start with some sort of machine cutting compound to expose new gel. Follow up with a machine and polish. I like 3M Finesse-It II for polishing step. I would wash boat between stages of recon and final finish. Putting your final finish on a gel surface with byproducts of compounds/polish is a mistake in my book.

Crud!... I just came back to re-read your response and also to see where you hailed from in hopes that you'd be trying out Zaino before I got to take off the shrink wrap... Looks like I may be giving Zaino a go before you since you're in Boston.

James you never know, the weather up here has been fantastic! Let me know if you try the Zaino. I bought the Presta cut already. getting itchy, hockey season for me is almost over as a High School ref. Things will be nice and quiet considering!

I have not used Presta Cut for fiberglass but I ordered some because the pros on the boards here were bragging it up and I want to see what it is worth.

Presta is a diminishing value compound as most are now days. It appears to be something of a medium cut product based on feel, not use. If so then I think it would be wise to follow up with a polishing of the fresh exposed surface. Machine and Finesse-It II would work.

The professionals here can correct me or I will find out for myself in a couple months when I test.

Couple of months? your in Texas. Is that for a haul and wax or are you northern TX? I am looking forward to trying it myself. I will def. polish then probably Zaino!!!

The Super Cut is an extremely heavy cut. The Gelcoat compound is more of a medium cut. No one else has anything even remotely close to the cutting power of Super Cut. 3m used to have Perfect-It III Extra Cut, and it was close, but they stopped making it.

. . . With that said then a machine polishing with something like a Finesse-It II would be a recommendation before a final finish? Let us know what you think for the OP that is going to use Super Cut.

Zaino All-in-One is used just before using their polish. At least that is what you do on auto paint. It helps the polish to bond to the surface. Spray your application pad with Z6 and then put your polish on the pad. Makes it easier to apply. After polishing, hit it again with Z6. If you want to apply two applications of polish you will need to order ZFX that mixes with the polish and accelerates the cure time.

Good luck!

Zaino All-In-One may be a good product for the correct application in automotive use. Auto paint finishes are much softer than Gel on fiberglass. I have my doubts that it could really do much on Gel. One thing I believe . . . Zaino for a final finish . . . the best.

With most compounds I would say follow up with a glaze, finesse-it, or somehting after the heavy cut, but the Presta grit diminishes so well, that you really don't get much, if any, swirling, so it really might not be necessary to follow up with something fine before waxing. Buff it and decide for yourself how it looks before proceeding with wax.

I called Zaino again to double check applications. He said compound (I will be using Presta ultra cut) then Zaino All-in-one followed with Z6. No other steps are neccesary. You guys with more product experience change anything? he said the All in one is a polish. I am so used to waxing 3 times I am a little leary. I may do a test with polsih and wax vs Zaino after presta compound and see which product wears better. The hull is in good shape the top-sides look like s__t after a month or so they dull. thx rob

I would only use Presta Ultra cut if the boat is heavily oxidized. If not I would suggest using Presta gel coat compound.

Rob, it was mentioned earlier by someone that if the dull returns right away it is because the oxidation was not fully removed. That may be where you stand now.

I would take a look at two more possibilities . . . Your compounded gel finish MAY need polished before you go to your final wax/synthetic finish. It could very well be that the glass' pores are simply too deep for a wax or synthetic finish to fill. That fill is where the smoothness, shine and optical clarity come from. Another consideration is you have reached the end of the exterior gel finish. There is an end to compound/buffing gel. I never want to go there.

I would ask a professional to look at what you have to work with.

So I went to the local dealer spring open house and they couldnt say engouh good things about Collinite products, and specifically finishing off with a coat of the "Insulator Wax" which will last all year. I hadn't read anyone mention that on here so I thought I'd ask. They said to compound (if necessary), then Fleetwax, then insulator wax and call it done.

Anyone tried insulator wax? Seems to be mostly referenced from auto forums.

Thanks
James

JMHO, I use buff magic, followed by Collinite 925 Liquid, seems to work great for me
