Water Pump Replacement

I have a 1988 Sea Ray with an alpha one outdrive. Can someone tell me if I can separate the lower unit from the upper unit to replace the water pump without removing the upper unit from the outdrive? Or, do I have to remove the whole outdrive?

Nibbugs - you can seperate the lower half of the outdrive while the upper is attached to the boat. You first need to drain the gear oil of course.
