Before I start off, I have a handheld radio which is a Uniden, I am not sure what model it is but it has never worked so good. The battery would always run out.

I would like a radio that I could connect to my northstar 550i plotter because since I am hearing impaired, I wouldn't be able to communicate via radio, so if there is an emergency, (knock on wood) I could use the distress button to have the authorities to come find me. What do you guys suggest and how hard is the installation?

I do have an NMEA input but it is already used, is there an adapter or do I have to splice it?

Any Icom or Standard Horizon radio. Your chartplotter can send position data via NMEA 0183 to more than one device.

Would you suggest a northstar radio? Are they any good?

I am pretty sure there is a small junction you can obtain and use, maybe someone who does the marine electrical will assist I know Raymarine makes this item for their C and E series devices But, as fc3 stated your

You can splice the NMEA 0183 connection with crimp connectors or you can use a junction box. It's low speed serial data, so it's not very fussy. Crimp connectors are quick and easy. The junction box is neater. I like junction boxes, but I notice that Sea Ray usually just crimps. Your choice.

I recently upgraded my VHF from a Raymarine 220 to a Raymarine 218. I'm blown away with quality and performance. I'd recommend a 218 to anyone for a fixed in console install. It can be bracket mounted as well.

I got this handheld VHF and I am very happy with it. The battery on this thing seems to last forever.

My fixed mount unit is the ICOM M504, very good too but it is more expensive than the Standard Horizon Quest-X proposed by the CSR - admin.
