I was reading the thread re: boat prices firming and I didn't want to highjack.
Our economy is teetering as well... but not toileting. This has spurred our provincial (state) government led by Gordon Campbell to increase the tax on everything we do... from lunch, carpet cleaning or a used boat or car, from 7% to 12%. This has screwed us all. Used boats do not sell in this province now. This is the prick that got busted in 2003 for impared driving in Hawaii while in office. To avoid a political execution by 'Mothers Against Drunk Drivers' (MADD) in our province he's also rubber-stamped the toughest drinking driving laws in Canada. We can't have even have one beer on the way home from work. The police now... judge and jury, at the side of the road, some with a high-school geek chip on their shoulder, have the right to take your vehicle and your licence for 90 days even if you're not over the .05 limit. This isn't against drunk drivers. We're all against that. This is against the working man.
What the hell has happened to us? We used to be able to go ride our dirt bikes in undeveloped provincial land. They're all logging roads. Now it's trespassing punishable by way of a big fine and your bike impounded. The pressure of 'lack of freedom' is weighing on people. What the hell did our grandfathers go to war and die for? Freedom? Who knew the real enemy was our own government!

What EVER changes with those elections? Just another idiot gets into office who promises you the world UNTIL he/she is elected. The on and on it goes...more BS. Only the name and face has changed. Whether it's north or south of the border....same old..same old.

Yea, well, I'm a young cynic. Do I believe anything good is going to come along...nope. Thats why I continue to bust my butt for a measly 65% of my paycheck.

I honestly don't know what to say. We are only as free as the government leads us to believe. To bad just about everyone within are goverment is only out to please themelves and their buddies.

I know somewhere within what the founding fathers did would allow the american people to overthrow this disaster we call a government, but nobody seems to want to step up, they rather sit and complain and take no action.

What I don't understand is...The government is a busniess, a company...and when a company starts to fail, or performs poorly. You fire all the people who are screwing it up...SO how come we as the employers of our government haven't fired every last one of them and started from scratch? After all we pay their salaries, and I sure as hell wouldn't pay someone to do a $hitty job on by boat, why do we let them run the country? :smt101

You know what....I'm not even American....but I do love the US....I ALWAYS enjoy myself when I get a chance to visit south of the border....I have some VERY good American friends. My occasional visits down there are ALWAYS made pleasant, enjoyable and memorable by your average every day folks that I run across. WITHOUT FAIL.

I'm not a huge history buff....but I have read quite a number of things said/written by your "Founding Fathers".

And I am absolutely amazed at just how BRILLIANT they were.

What a shame that so much of what they stood for...believed in...did...said...has gone by the wayside over the past couple hundred years.

Pity.

True. Have you actually listened to some of the crazies currently running for office in this country? Given a huge opportunity to toss out a bunch of lefty socialists, the right wing started recruiting from the county loony ward. The race to the intellectual bottom of the barrel is simply scary.

I do not know if this may cheer you up a little, but here in Italy, as an average, we get only 47% of our paycheck and our country is now on the verge of becoming third world…

I too am at 50% and next year I/we will be worse off. I just got a promotion and a raise, by today's rules I am only slightly higher, next year it looks like it is just about break even.

Paychecks... that's another one! I keep about 55% of mine... 55 measly cents of my buck. Say I go buy gas with that... our mid-grade fuel is $5.31 a gallon of which about 60% or more of that is tax too. No wonder I'm broke... boats cost peanuts compared to taxes!
Well, I'm off to work now because I have to start saving for next years $2900 property tax (they've already announced it's going up).
I see we're all feeling the pinch... even overseas...

Barr none, we still live in a great country. Yes we get to vote and it does count. I think no one (Dems and repub)took the tea party seriously which angered many Americans. They joined the organization in one form or another.

I have been to third world countries and this is where the people have to just accept what they are allowed to do. Not in America. We, the people can make a differance if most of them would get off thier fat a$$es and get involved.

What happens in third world countrys and some western coutrys, is that a "black" market is created to avoid taxes. I see the under table jobs here on the beach near me... Same place where they film MTV's Jersey Shore. Business owners will be forsed to keep two sets of books. It is happening now. The government needs to stop looking at taxes they collect as their money. If something does not change soon we will be a self licking ice cream cone, and just another EU socialistic nation...

That's not bad!! I am @ $9500 property tax and that's after I hired a lawyer last year to get them grieved down from $12,500!!!!!

What's your place worth though? It's expensive to live in NY isn't it? My neighborhood's places are in the $575k +/- range.
