Wow!!! Massive pungent smell coming from somewhere when we flush. My first thought is I will try to change filter. Here are some pics. Are these available in most marine stores, or is this an online buy?

You can get off-OEM version of the filters online for less than $50. I've also made a few myself for $10.

The big orange is the bad daddy. But, Im looking for a quick replacement. Good deal, Jim at Wholesale. Thanks for that link. I guess Im unsure as to what hose size I am, as I see the filters come in 4 hose sizes. 5/8, 3/4, 1.5...etc. I am assuming I am good with the model that fits both 5/8 and 3/4, but thought I would get some advice here first, before I buy.

Don't change it, modify it.

You can recharge that filter by using the activated charcoal you find in pet stores. It's used in aquariums to filter the water.

What you do is saw the thing in half and dump out the charcoal that's inside it into a plastic bag, then tie the top of the bag and toss it in the garbage. In each end of the filter you'll find a cellulose "sponge" filter that is used to keep the charcoal from getting out. Stick a hose in the end, turn on the water and and that cellulose filter will come out. Wash it out then reinstall it.

With the two halves that you've cut in half, glue in a threaded coupling (I think it's 1.5" PVC) so that the filter can be reassembled. You may need to shorten the plastic PVC filter by whatever length the threaded coupling is so that the length of the filter when it's screwed together is the same as it was before you installed the coupling.

Then fill each half with the activated charcoal and screw the coupling ends together.

Now, instead of spending $75 when the filter needs to be changed, you just replace the charcoal for about $3-$4.

Ok, good tips. But, lets say I dont mind spending the 75 bucks and dont really want to get into sawing, measuring, PVC, and glue. Based on the pic, is anyone able to tell what size I need to buy? 5/8, 3/4, 1 1/2....?

Ok, thanks. If I cant find one locally, I will order on Monday. I sure hope it fixes the totally foul smell we are getting right after a flush. Its brutal.

Get that filter raise up as high as you can and keep the hose running uphill to the air vent outside so that you do not create a sump in the vent line.

Is it that important to have the hose go "uphill" from the filter to outside air? I was thinking about raising the filter but it would be even with or above the vent.

OP update: Filter changed. Smell completely gone. Much thanks!
