Uuuuuuuum..............Oil is now at $133 a barrel

No, read the fine print. The "gimmie" is capped, both in terms of miles and absolute dollars. And the cap is actually quite low. I forget the details. . .but it did not strike me as anything more than a *modest* vehicle rebate

I don't know the details of their rebate program so my comments earlier were based on assuming they were being more sophisticated than that. However, I do think it is possible for a company like Brunswick to step up and be creative on bulk fuel costing (hedging, cost averaging, etc.) such that life would be more predictable and cost effective. If I could have some sort of "Brunswick fuel debit Visa card" that I paid into once per month (all year) and behind the scenes it was managed like airlines buy fuel, that would be a HUGE thing... heck of a lot better than just discounting boats. YOU LISTENING SEA RAY?!

Gary,
The wife intercepted our private message where you suggested I have a choice.....her or the boat.....now I can't go out and play without her....and she is the one with the money.....I am a retired bum..remember? Life just is not fair.

Oh yeah, she said she wants a word with you at BIH. Not sure what she has in mind but beware.

I filled up today at the Marina while gas was still "cheap".............. $3.99 a gallon.

I'll be interested to see how busy our lake will be this holiday weekend. My guess it won't be very busy mainly because of the price of fuel. I drove by one of the local "parking lot" used boat dealers today and he had several big signs on boats advertising they were re-po's. ........more signs of the time.

On a high note we made it to our local swimming spot today on the lake and the water was 84 degrees............great for swimming. Now I guess I need to thank Al Gore for some global warming just when we needed it don't I?

I'm certain my local waterway will not be busy.. Gas and oh yeah, then this

I'm actually anticipating ours to be busy. I don't think prople are going out of town and from the looks of the campsites as we cruised late last Sunday, they were already starting to claim camping spots.

sorry to renew the debate...BUT, Now that diesel in the L.A. area is now $1.25 a gallon MORE the gas, I guess I will re-think re tooling my gasssers into oil burners. Those big ass merc's are looking mighty efficient now that diesel prices are going thru the roof!

I think if you look at the economy of diesels vs the cost of fuel and compare it to gasoline and the mileage you can expect on a same size boat, its about a wash. Now look at the longevity of an oil burner vs. a gasser and it still makes sense to go diesel on larger boats.
Just my $.02. plus I am a diesel bigot....

Enough's been said on the gas/diesel subject before... but are you looking at street pump prices? If so, that's a flawed comparison. Off-road diesel, delivered dockside right to my boat is about $.50 gallon more right now. Don't know 'bout LA, tho.

It's so bad now I have people call me at home, whom I haven't spoken with in months, and say "I bet your sorry you have a boat now." It's like they are looking for someone that is being sucked for $$ more than they are and my name pops to the top of their list and they want to call me and poke a stick at me.

I'll send their sorry asses a postcard from Nantucket. Priceless.

Yeah, Except I live in the Tax Me State, and off road diesel is illegal to run on the water ways. NYS wants its cash regardless. The rule here is if it isn't in a tractor, or used on a farm, the red stuff is out of bounds. Kind of crap, I use the red diesel to mow my grass. I was going to build a bio fuel station at home a couple of years ago, until I found out that NYS wants .68 cents a gallon tax on each gallon I make at home, and the fine for not sending the tax in was insane.

May I love this state! (NOT)

Cagnoli,

It sounds like NY is becoming the state of the "United Kingdom" with all the taxing going on..............................

$4.20 for gas and $4.86 for diesel appears to be the threshold for keeping boats at the dock. We normally have hundreds of boats go by our house every week end particularly for the memorial day fireworks. Last Friday, there were just 3 boats for the fireworks and one of those was the sheriff. We ran down to Port Sheldon Saturday for lunch and hanging out on the hook. We saw no boats on the ride down and were the only boat achored for quite a while. Later a big SR and a Cruiser dropped their hooks and stayed for a while. Only a handful of boats went by our house yesterday. We did notice that the price of fuel at the marinas is the same as it is at gas stations. I believe the marina owners in our area are trying to keep the prices as reasonable as possible instead of adding the customery 50 cents to the street price.

Becoming? If I had a dollar for every dollar I paid in tax, i'd be rich.

I was blown away at how few boats were out this weekend. The Mooring fields are still more than half empty, marinas were full the whole weekend. seemed like no one went out. Usually the LIE is a parking lot back into the city on this weekend, not this year.

Well I was wrong about folks staying away from our lake because of the cost of fuel. It was the busiest I have ever seen it.

Get your Senators, Representatives and congressman to support this, it may just help a little. I got an email about this from my Caterpillar rep, I have also sent it to members of CSR as well as others.
The American Energy Production Act S2958 was introduced by the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. See link below.

Wow! Should have done that at least six years ago. Better far late than never.

Best regards,
