Hey everyone,

It's my first season with my new (to me) 2001 Sundancer 340. Halfway through the season, I noticed a little water appearing in the bildge. I monitored it and it never seemed a big issue but I would look at it in the next month after it was out of the water.

The boat comes out of the water and I see this (see attached photo). I'm mad that the seller may have tried to get one by me by caulking the exhaust when he noticed it leaking.

Regardless, I'm stuck with making it right but I have no clue as to what this will cost or take for me to fix. Anyone have a clue on this one?

Cheers all, and thanks in advance for any advice.

Did you have a survey done before purchase?

I'd have a competent glass guy take a look at that. I tend to lean toward having professionals work on the stuff below the water line myself.

And +1 to the above question. It certainly seems like something like that would have shown up on a survey. What does the port side look like?

Did you have a survey done before purchase?
Yes. The survey did not show anything wrong. I can tell you I do not operate in unsafe water or shallow water... Don't know how it happened or when but I'm stuck with the repair.

Any idea of how to do this or what is involved? We either pay with our time or money... Trying to figure out which option I'll be using

I can't believe the survey didn't catch that, He did check the boat out of the water also? It's gonna have to come off and be resealed, As the other gentleman suggested, I would hire a pro to do it.

Other side is solid and no white sealant around it. I do know a highly recommended fiber glass guy. I'll give him a call.

Yeah, the survey was done out of the water but it was not loose at that time. I have pics of the area and it was tight. He's a highly recommended surveyor in my area and I trust him (he's checked 3 boats I've owned and my family and friends as well).

I appreciate all your thoughts and experience. That's why this board is so important to owners.

Cheers all!

Are you keeping this boat in fresh water?
I see no zincs on the trim tabs

I believe the underwater exhaust port is secured to the bottom of the boat with several small screws (Sea ray designed the exhaust to be knocked off if during impact with minimum damage to the hull... I think). You would probably need to remove the exhaust inspect the screw holes... may be stripped out, if so fill with a marine grade epoxy and re-drill. Clean the surface reseal and install. Need to check of the hull is solid glass in that area. If it is no worries, if there is a wood core you may have problems. just be glad it did not fall off... they are pricy!

Thank you very much. Extremely helpful. Other than this, the boat is in amazing condition for a 2001.

I called my glass guy to take a quick look. I'll let you all know what's going on.

Cheers!

You could have hit a small log or something like that while running. I would have it looked at before spring launch.

You can probably save the old one and re use it just make sure it's taken off carefully. And cleaned up real good if necessary

Definitely having it looked at by a pro. I do a lot of maintenance but there are some things I didn't like to work... This is going to be one of them.

I'll get the opinion of the pro and see.

I like my boat to float

I have a thread on this. A prefab exhaust tube is glassed perpendicular into the hull and the underwater exhaust port is through bolted on the outside of the hull. I had water and exhaust leaking in between the outside of the tube and the hull and then running down the engine stringers and into the bilge wherethe stringers hit the transom. We ended up grinding out and then reglassing the hull area at the hull exhaust tube interface, and then enlarged the bolt holes for the underwater ports, filling them with epoxy and redrilling. Overall about a 5 grand repair I believe. It's been 2 years now and the bilge is bone dry. See my thread on here for the details. I posted pics and everything.

Wow! I greatly appreciate this reply. I'm going to check it out now. Very helpful.

Thank you!
