Trying to fly out for Surveys

Back to the original post, @Spark600 the surveyor doesn't need you there to do his or her job. In fact, they will probably focus more without you there. The advantage of being present is that you can learn from them, and you can see any issues first-hand.

If you can't attend, have them do the survey anyway. If there are any significant or concerning issues, you can schedule a follow-up trip to see them first had, and you will know what to look for based on the surveyors report. If you can't go today, just fly out over the weekend to look at anything significant. You might be able to pay the surveyor to come back for an hour and walk you through the main findings.

You want the boat, the broker wants to sell the boat, you can find a way to make it work.

I looked at a boat in Los Angles once. I had planned on going and looking when it got surveyed. Due to work I did not make it. Survey was arranged by firm selling the boat. I got call from firm saying they needed a captain to move the boat to hall out area. I told them to take his fee and the survey fee out of my 10% holding deposit. They did without objecting. Surveyor called me and said Do not buy boat. Do you want a written report. Turned out hull was warped.

In NY if you travel in the US and are there under 24 hours you do not have to quarantine or do any testing, If more then 24 hours you have to quarantine 10-14 days and get tested.
Because from a science standpoint that makes complete sense

Did you make it out for the survey? This boat also came up for sale at the same price point in Newport Beach, just south of Marina Del Rey. https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2015/sea-ray-410-sundancer-3520571/
Thanks for your help, I have inquired about this boat already.
The boat is in a LLC with very low HR ( 88 ) but when it was built they did not put any options in it, It is stripped and the broker said it is leaking antifreeze and needs to be check out.

I did get out after they d iced the plane for 40 minutes as it was snowing.
The survey was intense and about 8 hours without no lunch.
Several small things came up as well as one big one, the port pod had a very small drip of water from the seal on the hull to pod.
I myself and the mechanic check out the starboard pod seal and and determined it was fine.

Without no oil samples and reports back, just a dock conversation between all surveyors and broker they determine it will cost about $ 10K to 15K to pull the pod and fix the leak, as well as the few other minor things, The owner was call to discuss the situation and his reply was to get all reports back and numbers on repairs and will take it from there.
The broker call me late that night and said after a long conversation with the seller she is 99% sure he is going to pay for all to be repaired.
I clearly told the broker if all of this is not repaired at the seller cost and done before I take the boat the deal is off.

My advice would be to get a price to repair in NY, then discount that plus 20% just to be safe. That way any warranty repairs on the pod would be in your backyard. A bad repair done in CA. is no good to you.

Nothing wrong with trying to get an additional 20% but not sure the seller will go for it. Keep in mind there are some parts the Pod that they won't be able to determine its condition until the Pod is apart. One thing you want to ask mechanic is the condition of the steering actuators. They are not cheap. Good luck!

Thanks Shaps, and bahemabreisus These are both great points, One of my concerns is what they will find when it is taken apart.
The warranties in CA is a really good point.
One of my reasons to get it fix in CA is we talked about the work being done at MM in CA.
If done in NY I guess it would be MM in NJ, I was hoping somehow the warranties would be connected, Not sure as the MM are independent dealers.

The parts should be covered under warranty regardless of where they're installed.. the labor.... Well...

Maybe insist the work be done by Marine Max, I think then the warranty would be good in NY. But I would check first.

Also check on the timeline for the repairs here in CA. It could be here a while before they can even work on it as most of the shops are backed up.

Given that pods are quite complex and you don’t know what will be found once opened, I would not assume the risk of repairs myself. I’d absolutely want the seller to make the repairs.

Make sure they have checked the knuckles on the trim tab actuators as well as the actuators themselves
The knuckles on the originals were known to fail and while not explicitly covered by mercruiser they have.been known to step up. The actuators seals can get damaged by growth on the ram and cause a leak and ultimately fail
