Sounds like bad trim senders on the BIII. Mine started doing the same thing a couple of weeks ago. While cruising on plane the "trim fault" message appeared on the SC display, and the analog drive trim indication showed that my drive had gone to full down. However, I was still cruising along at the same speed, engine RPMs stayed the same, and there was no difference in the sound of the engine. I waited about 45 seconds, and the trim gauge went back to where it was and the alarm stopped.

As long as your drive really isn't moving on its own, the senders are the culprits. If the drive is moving (without your input) then you may have a hydraulic leak in the trim system, or bad trim rams.

Mine went on Saturday. The gauge on both teh analogue and the smartC both read 0 even tho it is going up and down on the trim button. Had to get her craned out of the water today and sensors are being replaced tomorrow. Very irritating!!!

Mine went out a few months ago. Getting the sender replaced next week. The alarm was intermittent for a few weeks before it finally locked in.

Everytime ive run into this problem on a smartcraft system its always been a trim sender puck. Infact all it needs is a 1/16"-1/32" of a tweak at the puck, and the alarm has ALWAYS gone away.

Please before you order the puck kit ($100 through merc) try just adjusting it a tad

Guys... Just fixed mine. It wasn't the sender either! It was the wiring behind the SmartCraft system - the connectors just needed cleaning up. Seems that it works on resistance and my connectors had gotten wet and weren't transmitting - 5 minute fix. So worth checking all of the connections from where the senders come through in the transom through to the smartcraft unit on the helm.

What exactly needs to be done to adjust the sender? Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm experiencing the same problem on both drives. Can this adjustment be done in the water. Provided I can old my breath long enough.

What color wires am I looking for inside the boat. Any lettering or identification to help find the wires?

Thanks

Search for Dave S and he had a post about recalibrating to Smartcraft trim sensor.
