You don't say where you are coming from but buy charts of the area or a Chartbook anyway.

Looks like about 130nm in open water. Not sure what you are looking for but in decent conditions its an easy day's run.

When I was 16 my cusine and I took a 16 footer with a 10 from Belleville to Lake Simco. No charts. We had a road map. It was a simple trip. Based on my recollection of Lake Ontario it has some good waves. Your boat should handle it. Based on the comments in your post I would say your level of experience is not that high. Best in my opinion to employ a captain for a day and go out in some rough lake water get him to help you decied on the navigation equipment you require, charts you will require and safety equipment. We looked at getting a place on the Trent system a few years ago. There are lots of Yacht Clubs in the area some that have lots of reciprical agreements on Lake Ontario. Going from Club to club would be fun. Your fellow Ontario boaters can probably recommend a culb in Kingston.

Our boat will be at Ivy Lea Club. Know the route to kingston. Some boaters have stated there is a way to go west that is somewhat protected. As well looking for spots to stop along the way. We plan to take 2 weeks. Have you crossed the eastern side of lake ontario to go to the US.

Hello, and congrats on the new boat.
The protected route is known as the North Shore "inside route", it will protect you from the prevailing southwesterlies as you head toward TO. We used to go through there when we had the 290, we would trailer it to Wilson NY and cross to Brighton, then on to Kingston. It is a great trip through there, probably the best cruising grounds on Lake Ontario. We stayed in Brighton,Trenton and Belleville,(different trips) and all were nice, but we haven't been through there since moving out of the 290 into the bigger boats, so things may have changed so I won't recommend anything. If you are in a hurry, and the weather is good, you can go around the outside of Prince Edward County and do the whole run in a day, but you will miss a lot of nice towns and scenery. For the north shore trip, try googling cruising the Bay of Quint.

Now we go through the Erie canal to Oswego then do the eastern end crossing to Cape Vincent.
That only takes about 2 hours (45 miles +/-) but you will want a fairly calm day to make it enjoyable, it's all open water.
Enjoy the trip.
