Dear All
I have a 340 sundancer. Yesterday I was coming back into the marina and noticed the port engine was making noise I took it out of gear and the noise stopped. When I put it back in gear it was obviously comng from the drive train. The noise is a clicking whining sound. No vibration. Does anyone know what this is? When you check your transmission fluid does the engine have to be running? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Hoping its not too serious.

sounds like transmission based on little info giving.....do you recall putting the port engine in gear while under load of throttle......docking, undocking, etc......You can check the transmission fluid I believe and see if it is clean or if it has metal shavings...........This is a total guess........

It was making the noise while I as idling along. Trans fluid looked clean. Thanks for your input.

Martini, trust me, check and possibly change your spark plugs!!! I had a very similar sound, replaced transmission with NEW transmission, fired her up and still got the same noise. Put computer on the starboard engine and discovered it wasn't the transmission, it was the #2 cylinder mis-firing.

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunetly it was inspected and a gear has shifted. It would appear the boat in its life somehow hit a log. It worked itself finally free. I do appreciate the heads up for next time.
