I'm looking for advice regarding the transducer for my Garmin EchoMap 50s. I have a 2007 240 SD and the ducer is transom mounted. I've been on the water six times and the transducer is broken. The mount is fine. I assume that the marina lift popped it since I don't hit things! ;-)

Should I:

1. Open the checkbook and replace whenever the lift driver decides to make my day and snap off another?

2. Mount through-hull or in-hull? Is in-hull even an option? Is the Sundeck a cored hull?

3. Have another vodka tonic?

4. Any combination of 1-3?

Thanks for the input!

I'd go with 1 and 3 along with snapping a quick picture on your phone to document the condition of your xducer. That is if they lift it while your there.

I just installed an echomap 50s with an in hull transducer on my 06 260 dancer. I emailed Sea Ray for the location and they basically said in the bilge right off of center.
I haven't dropped her in the water yet to see how it went so I can't speak to that but it should be fine.
I don't remember the transducer number right off hand but I can get it if you want. It doesn't do water temps and I had to update the software for the 50's to recognize it.

It's a P79 tansducer.

blaster: I've thought about that. Good & bad news. The marina has controlled access to the storage and lift areas (which I like - no hooligans). I really can't see what is going on very well at lift time though.

wyman: Thanks for the info. I will look into the P79 and will be interested in how happy you are with it when you splash.

Thanks!

Sundecks are cored as far as I remember.

But is the ducer BROKEN broken? And which ducer was it? On many TM mounts you can replace the mount kit on the transducer just with a couple of screws - and put on a fresh mount. The transducers themselves are usually built like tanks.

If the mount can't be replaced - but still "pings" you could try putting the transducer in-hull. Grab a plastic bag - fill it with water - put the transducer in there and zip tie the bag so the water does not flow out. Then put it different places "in-hull" to see if you get any echo returns - got to 90-200' of water to test.

If it is a small 'ducer and you get returns - find some soft putty and stick it to your hull where you get best ping returns. Massage the putty to eliminate as many air-bubbles as possible. That might take you through the entire season - IF you can find a place without coring. My dad is using a TM mount 'ducer as an in-hull - and has done for years with no issues. But it is only one of the "smaller" Garmin TM mounts. If it is the bigger ones - they do need the water cooling....

I bought both transducer and 50s from BOE.

So this is what I currently have (stock Garmin that came with the 50s):

The xducer still works. The mount that is attached to the boat is fine. The "arms" on the xducer that attach to the mount are broken. Basically it just hangs there by the wiring harness.

I am thinking that I want to go with a thru-hull or in-hull (if it is an option for me). I see the P79 is an in-hull. Interested if anyone else has experience with the P79. Still thinking (and drinking) though! Opinions on thru-hull stainless, bronze or plastic?

Thanks

As I think your boat is cored - there might be a few spots where it is not - like dead center in front of engine.. So try the "water bag" there and see if you get a suitable return. It's so easy to test. If you get something usable - THEN consider the p79... If you you have saved your money on getting a p79. But you have to go "deep" to test for returns.

Cored hulls can show some "depth" at shallow water but once you get on deeper water it will show as a lot of noise as the return signals get weaker and weaker from the bottom - but stays the same for the cored hull.

Why don't you email Sea Ray and ask them where to mount it?

I will give the water bag a try this weekend.

I did email Sea Ray and here is the response:

"To answer you question on install a transducer to your 2007 240SD I would recommend taking your boat to a certified Searay dealer in your area for this type of work.If you contact them they will better help you with this type of installation. As far as the hull it is a fully layered fiberglass hull . If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us."

Feels like a stock answer and I am not 100% confident that the answer on the hull is accurate. I do remember reading somewhere that the hull is cored.

Hmmmm...

Wow, that's a completely different type of answer than I got from them. I wouldn't be too happy with that answer.
