Hello everyone!! i'm currently in the process of buying my first boat, a 185 sport 2006 with a 4.3l engine. i have a ton of questions for all of you, but the one that is on mind at the moment is the impact on the miles per gallon while towing your boat. can you please let me know. i have to do a nice drive to go get my new boat.

If you post your towing vehicle info you may get some feedback....welcome to the board....Dave.

Welcome to the board.

What are you going to be towing with? Knowing that will get you a lot of information from the replies.

A few basics though; make sure the tow vehicle can easily handle the weight of whats being towed. Consider the weight of the boat, plus all the gear, plus liquids (fuel, etc), and the weight of the trailer and make sure you are well within the max limit of your tow vehicle. Also, consider the brakes on the tow vehicle and whether your trailer has a braking system.

Good luck on your new boat purchase. :)

Mike

Well it has negligible impact on mine but unless like me you have a lot more truck than really needede it's probably not going to be your case. :smt001 You should get plenty of answers when you update us.

Welcome to the board! and congrats on having your first boat! ( I was total newbie to boating last year but the people here are very gentle  )

Don't know if this will help but I have a Nissan Titan with towing package (not a 4x4) and towing a 240 Sundeck.

When driving to Punta Gorda from Tampa I use about 1/4 tank of gas. With the boat that doubled to 1/2 tank of gas and that's just 1 way.

OK i have a 185 sport 2007 i tow it with a nissan titan in tow mode (the little tow mode button pressed) and i take my boat from pinellas park to ft desoto state park and back and waste a quarter tank.. its a half hour ride each way without traffic.

Something doesn't seem right. It's 2 hours 12min from my house to where I was in Punta Gorda and it took 1/2 a tank in my titan to pull a 240 SD with a dry weight of 4680lbs and was 123miles

And you pulled your boat with a dry weight of 2400lbs 1 hour and used 1/4 tank of gas?

Waste? no such thing when it comes to boating!

Well it was a waste. He wasted it in the truck instead of using it in the boat

I tow my little 20' ski boat (~4000 lbs.) with a 2007 Ford Expedition and on a recent 90 mile trip (half freeway half up mountain passes) got 14MPG where I would normally get about 19. The vehicle has a 6 speed auto and when going up the grades I took it out of overdive but while on flat and level freeway and 65MPH it is only doing about 1800 RPM's which helps.

I tow with a 2007 Nissan Titan and mine drops to about 11mpg. I remember reading in the owner's manual the tow mode should be used when the towed weight approaches 75% of the tow vehicle capacity. I never use it but then again, it's pretty flat here in N. Texas.
