What are the top 5 places you wish to go boating but haven't yet?
Mine:
1. Catalina Island from Long Beach
2. Seattle to Alaska
3. Bahamas from FL.(where ever you FL guys think is a good starting point  )
4. North East- Cape Cod old fishing towns, etc.
5. Croatia (my Wife's cousins live in Czech Republic and vacation there looks like beautiful boating area)

Number one on the list would be all those great places that Todd (Nehalennia) is always putting in those pictures!

Numbers 2 - 5:

2: New England (I've been as far as Playmouth, MA, but I mean Upper MA, NH and Maine).
3: Italian Riviera
4: The Atlantic ICW from Norfolk to Florida (which would also mean that I had the time to do that, which would mean I was retired, which would mean I'd be on a Fleming 55!)
5: The Bahamas (see above re: Fleming 55)

I would love to :

1.) do the KeyWest run from tampa to KeyWest maybe as part of one of the MM getaways.
2.) Bahamas trip. take the Okachobee across the state, down the ICW to Fort Lauderdale and make the 80 to 90 Mile jump to FreePort.
3.) Keep going to the Turks/Caicos
4.) Slap a couple of 50 gallon drums to the swim platform and head for Tortuga ( my old man said it was one of his favorite ).
5.) keep going till the money runs out or I fall of the face of the earth.

Of Course i'd have to take out a huge life insurance policy cause the chances of being lost at see in such a small boat with Signle engine and signle screw are pretty good.

oh well where just dreaming right...

1. Lake McDonald in Glacier Park (old stomping grounds)
2. Flathead Lake ( see above)
3. Head over west to Todd's hideaways
4. Fl to the Bahamas ( would mean a bigger boat! :smt001 )
5. New England area

Fl Keys - Tortuga, if able
Bahamas
Back to Apalachicola
Back to Destin, Crab Island next time
Shell Island, over and over and over again

I think this is all going to depend on the type of boating people like to do. Our family's idea of boating is the ability to cruise from place to place and check out the local culture and spend a little more time at a given place than most boaters do. I don't think we are full-fledged gunkholers, but we are not the type that likes to spend every weekend racing to a place with a bunch of people, partying, then racing home (I'm not referring to the "rendezvous" things as I enjoy those, but the "race to the local bar in our go fast boats" crowd). Nothing against that and I do enjoy a good beer, but we are more of "explorers" and like to soak it all in.

Saying that, the #1 place I always wanted to go boating is the Chesapeake Bay and that's where we are. There are over 3000 miles of shoreline on the bay and 100's of small towns that are right out of the 1960's where people are friendly. The Chesapeake, from north to south, is so diverse from wide open water where you can't see land to back rivers and destinations ranging from the largest metropolitan spots like Baltimore to small towns like Onancock, Urbanna, St. Michaels, etc. It truely is a blessing to experience cruising the Chesapeake and if you ever get time to do it, you'll never regret it. The local cusine, art, entertainment, and culture are second to none. We leave in a week and a half and will be poking around the Bay for 4 to 5 weeks. As an example, we'll be in Annapolis for a full week and the kids will be in a sailing school from 9 to 3 for 5 days in a row... ( http://www.kidshipsailing.com/week.php ) great fun. 99.9% of the population does not know what they are missing.

Saying that, there are 3 other places I would like to cruise over the next 5 years...

1. The Bahamas (was supposed to do that this year but looks like next year will be it)

2. NE US coast (Manhatten, Sag Harbor, Block Island, Martha's Vineyard, etc.

3. Great Lakes/Great Circle Route... I grew up in Michigan and my parents owned a small family restaurant in a small tourist/boating town on Lake Huron. I had several sailboats as a kid and my family had an "Owens Cabin Cruiser". What a hoot that was in hindsight. Would love to visit that area again and explore the eastern coast of Lake Huron/Georgian Bay on the Canadian side. The small towns around Michigan are very much like the small towns around the Chesapeake Bay.

My 2 cents...

crOck1 - you will probably want to start a new topic on this one for two reasons. First not to get this one off topic. Second, to get more views more responses.

I would have to agree with Hampton Shell Island again, again, and again!!!!

My cruising priorities right now are:
1. Chesapeake Bay (planned for this July 7-21)
2. Maine coast beyond Portland
3. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
4. Great Circle (except current boat is too tall to get past Chicago)
5. Seattle/Vancouver
6. Transit the Panama Canal
7. Mediterranean Sea

Sorry I had to add a #6 and 7.

Honest opinion.. would my 20 ft 185 sport have any chance of going to fl keys?

I would do it by trailer, stopping and putting in periodically at the great spots. You could still cruise the entire area, but have a safety whenever you need it.

cunfusing but somewhat understood... lol

1) Florida Keys
2) The Bahamas
3) The loop
4) Alaska
5) Gulf of California

hmmmmm, looks like I need a different boat.

Good question Todd. I’ll try to answer it realistically, given my location and current boat.

Ditto everything Gary said about the Chesapeake, except with one additional caveat. Put on my wish list a much cleaner Bay. The cruising scenery can be breathtaking, but unfortunately, can be spoiled at times by the filthy water. The “Save The Bay†program seems to be only a political tool to gain votes from all that enjoy the area, as the latest report is that it has gotten somewhat worse.

1- A cleaner Chesapeake
2- Up the Hudson
3- Lake Champlain
4- Thousand Islands
5- Cape Cod

Looks like the majority want to head South and I’m one of the few that would rather go North.

I'm a New England boy, through and through, and now a freshwater boater, but it is nice to dream. So, here's 5 that'll likely never happen, (unless I'm on a cruiseship) and 5 more probable ones:

1.)Caribbean in general (ever read Jimmy Buffet's "A Pirate Looks at Fifty? He mostly does it by floatplane but WOW! There's a guy who knows how to live!)

2.)South Pacific, the Marshall Islands in particular. (I'm a bit of a WWII history buff.)

3.)Todd's NW cruising paradise!

4.) Lake Tahoe

5.) Alaska

Closer to home, and therefore to reality:

6.) Maine coast from Portland to the Canadian border. I could write a book on all the cool places along there.

7.) Lake Champlain

8.) St. Lawrence Seaway and the Thousand Islands

9.) Moosehead Lake in Maine. The northern 2/3 is as close to wilderness as you're likely to find anywhere. There are still sportsman's camps where the guests arrive by floatplane.

10.) Anywhere I could manage to cruise with and hang out with my CSR cyber-buddies!

Cheers,

Bill
