Thoughts on these 3 SunDeck choices, 240 vs 270

I do like the 240, a lot. In fact I've had 2 04's already and enjoyed them very much. We are usually a big group when going out with 4 adults and 6 kids. Figure the 270 would provide a bit more room. There are some great deals to be had on 04/05 240's but I'm starting to think the 270 will suit our needs better. It will wind up being about a 10-12K difference.

Think I'm down to these two boats. Definitely prefer the black color but it is a year older with double the hours (177 vs 340).

Here is the 06

Comments on these two? 05 is 40K and 06 35K. Think that says it all..

That '06 has a vacuflush, that's worth having. It also has the full camper canvas.

I'll keep shopping this weekend but pretty sure I'll make an offer on the 06. Spoke to the dealer again this evening and he said 35K will get it sold. Asking 39,900 with NADA and the bank saying 35K is damn dear wholesale. I'm thinking 33K or 35K and they deliver it to my marina.

SeaNile,

A couple of comments. The ad for the '06 says it has always been stored indoors. If so, why does it have bottom paint. I'm guessing you will be boating in brackish water???? Will you be keeping the boat in a dry stack, a wet slip (bottom paint is a plus), or on a lift. Being based in RI, was this 270 a saltwater boat? If so, I'd be curious with regard to the condition of the outdrive and manifolds. Also, the '06 appears to be in the middle of a detailing job. On the other hand, the '05 is fresh water boat (has it spent all of its life in MO on a lift?) kept on a lift. So, the manifolds will more than likely be fine and outdrive corrosion should be minimal. So, I would not totally discount the '05 or any other 270 at this point.

Good luck.

I noticed that in the ad for the 06 as well. It was stored indoors during winter but wet slipped in salt water for summer use. Waiting on the pics of outdrive and engine which I should get today.

I'm on the Upper Chesapeake Bay and will be in a high and dry. Ideally a non painted bottom would be best but having it painted is not a deal breaker at all.

The 05 won't go below 40K whereas the 06 is 35K.

Good for you. Good luck with the purchase.

Not sure how far you're willing traveling but here's a nice 2005 270SD with a 6.2L MPI and 593 hours for $32,500 here in MN. It's not too far from me and I'd be happy to look at it in person this week and take some pics for you. The owner of the facility is a great guy and I'm sure he'd be willing to help arrange transport if needed.

Saw that one online and it definitely caught my eye. Love the black color but ultimately looking for a 496 boat. Less than 400 hours would be nice too.

Slight change of plans. Oldest son has scheduled event on Saturdays until mid Sept. Going to wait until late February and then will start up the search again. Ideally would like to have a boat by late April so I can get a full season of use.

Just a thought, as I have 3 high school kids myself. If I tried to wait until they all had free weekends, we wouldn't boat until they are out of college in 8 years. Buy the boat, and enjoy it when and while you can.

I have a 2002 240 Sundeck with the 5.7 and I would NOT get the 5.0. I test drove 1 or 2 with the 5.0 and they were IMO quite underpowered. The 5.7 EFI is fine and gets right out of the hole... the same can not be said for the 5.0

I'll add that the pre-2009 (or whatever year it was they shrunk them) 240 Sundecks are big boats. Mine is 26 ft with the swim platform IIRC. You can easily fit 8+ adults no problem and there's TONS of storage. They also cut through the chop really well and have a great ride. I looked at a ton of them prior to settling on the 2002 I bought (had about 370 hours and had always been dry stacked). I wouldn't worry about the year so much, once boats get to be more than a few years old maintenance and TLC is what really matters. I passed on several newer sundecks (some of which could have been had for less than I paid) because the one I ended up getting was in much better condition (both hull and engine wise). I'd also be wary about boats with low hours for their year. One of the worst things you can do with a boat is never use it.

Still shopping around.

Just missed out on an 06 270 SunDeck with 496 engine, 300hrs, very well kept, no issues asking 34,500 and it sold for $24,000!!! Dealer also said last month they wholesaled a very similar 270 with 496 for 19K. I am in shock. Everywhere I see these 270's are 35K and up, some approaching 50K with the 496. I'm not talking a 2010 either, these are 04/05/06 270's.

The 240's sell fast and it seems like 25K is the going rate for an 04/05/06. They sure are listed for a lot, most $29999-35,000.

At this point in the season here in the NE the adult in me says wait until fall and winter rolls around and then seriously shop around. The 240 would suit us well, we have had 2 of them before, but I kind of have my heart set on a 270 with 496. All of course for a great price!

Great thread! I'm in the market for the same boat, and have been looking at a 240 Sundeck in Long Island but it has the 5.0 which I won't go for after reading these responses. Hadn't even considered a 270, but now I'll be watching for one. I'll be using the boat in the Barnegat Bay so want to have all the power I need to have a smooth ride. Season is almost over so like you I'll be watching over the fall/winter for a great deal.

My budget is around $25k, which could go up if I find a super clean boat and everything checks out. Good luck to both of us in our searches!

At this point I'm beginning to realize there is about a minimum of $7,000 difference between a 240 and 270. I'm still sticking with $25,000 gets you an exceptional 04/05/06 240 with 350MAG. Non 350 MAG boats for for less. I'd rather have a 350MAG 240 than a 270 with 6.2l engine. There are 3 240's I am considering right now.

I'm talking to a guy about a 2002 240 with a 5.0, asking $17500. Just had all the necessary work done last year (manifolds, bellows, etc. to the tune of $3100). Talked with marina this week and they advise that the 5.0, propped right would be a fine motor for the bay and what I'm going to use it for.

Spend a bit of time searching on here for feedback on the 5.0 in a 240.

Doing that and talking with marina. Need a sea trial also to determine which boat will be right for me. Lots say 5.0 in a 240 is underpowered, marina saying propped right the 5.0 is fine. Have to test for myself.

Drive it... I would not have been happy with the 5.0. I have a 2002 240 myself (paid 20K for it with the 5.7 EFI)
