The "virus" What are your thoughts

BEH, damn good question.

Pure panic I guess. Folks out of work and in need of money. So I guess the fear of home invasions and such have folks concerned. I'm not doing anything different then I have been doing in the past, when it comes to my firearms.

I heard that 30+ police officers called off the other day in just one precinct alone in NYC.
A lot think we are just getting started.

Cuomo made a comparison to flu numbers in his press conference today.

I think the real issue is the speed and compressed time frame. The flu is spread out.

Cuomo!? This has been out there for 4-6 mos.

The numbers you see on your news are not rates of infection they are rates of testing w positive results. All those people w recent positive tests have been infected for some time.

There’s a lot of confusion w people thinking the growing numbers are an actual rate of recent infections.

We’re just finding out how many people have it already.

The more people tested will show more people infected or who were infected and now have antibodies, there will be more deaths thats inevitable.
Now to buy food and things we have a senior Special in hours 6:00 am - 7:30 am. In most stores the shelves are still empty. In a local store called "Shop-Rite" you are only allowed 2 boxes of tissues and 1 package of chicken. Should you try to use the self serve checkout, the computer will freeze the unit when you try to check out 3 boxes of tissues. Then a clerk comes by and takes the 3rd box away from you.

Not downplaying the virus - but as we find out how many people actually have it, it drives the mortality rate lower... As of this morning was 1.34%, currently 1.28% (281/22,019) per the data on the website listed above in post 847.

The new numbers refer to active cases. The virus runs its course in 2-3 weeks. All of these people have been infected in that time frame. Not sure what your definition of recent is, but that seems pretty recent to me.

I agree. I just find the comparison with the flu numbers interesting. The optimist in be thinks this will have lower numbers than the flue.

They have several days of backlogged samples that are now being tested. They too the samples before they had the automated testing equipment running. That's why we are seen these huge increases. There are some people on message boards having their symptoms letup before their results come back.

With all due respect you are misinformed.

The SYMPTOMS do run it’s course however the test results of positive or negative will remain after you recover.

The antibodies remain and result in positive test even if you’re not “sick”.

Keep hearing concerns about masks. Not sure what the issue is. 3m makes a billion masks per year worldwide. They do 400 million in the US, 33 mil per month. Hopefully they are on delivery trucks all over.

My wife works in a hospital and I just asked her the same questions.

She says the masks are disposed after every single patient encounter by the entire clinical team.

So they’re going in the infectious waste can.

Trump and his sidekicks were just on TV a bit ago. They are now looking at ways to sterilize the masks instead of tossing them. I don't know the mechanics of it, but it would cut down drastically on the usage of masks if they can make it work.

One thing struck me while the guys on TV were talking. I can't even begin to wrap my head around the massive amounts of coordination that are going on right now. Just with masks alone, FEMA has set up a coordination center that will match supply and demand and shorten the lead time in getting masks to those who need them.

They were also asking medical offices (doctors, dentists, etc.) to take a look at their inventory of masks and if they can spare some, to deliver them to the local hospitals.

These new "ideas" like this just amaze me. We've never, ever been in a situation like we're in now. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.

My daughter the nurse here in Indy is forced to wear the same mask all day...

ADR to you as well but I believe you are wrong. The currently deployed tests are for COVID RNA so reflect an active infection; how else could there be "negative" tests after quarantine/treatment? Antibody tests are coming and there are very good reasons to use them, see https://www.sciencemag.org/news/202...es-could-show-true-scale-coronavirus-pandemic.

True if the tests are swab style. Lab tests via blood samples are a different story. I should have clarified my statement.

That's kind of what the person was alluding to. I'm not one who could even remotely be considered a prepper but we have stocked up on fresh and frozen food items. More than our normal pantry full of stuff. With my chemo treatments I've been told to eat lots of fruit, and my wife knows I ALWAYS do as I'm told.

If you had the choice, would you even start chemo right now?

Run on guns and ammo....if this last months and gets worse you may start seeing looting and break-ins. I will do what I need to to protect myself and my family. Hope it never comes to that but I'd rather be prepared. As a former law enforcement officer I understand and have seen these types of things firsthand. I can assure you I am not the only one. Went past a local gun store yesterday and the parking lot was full and there were 7 or 8 cars parked alongside the highway. I have never seen it like that before
