If you look at the CDC mortality figures for influenza this year compared to the same period last year, the numbers seem to drop off very sharply. I am not sure if that is typical or due to incomplete reporting. The CDC reports over 32,000 excess deaths in 2020 so far up to a couple of weeks ago, see https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm. That 32K is over and above the number of already-recorded COVID deaths and are largely clustered starting in March and since. The vast majority are assumed to be undiagnosed COVID, the remainder probably mostly indirectly COVID-related as there is no other logical explanation, at least so far. So, while there are sure to be individual cases of erroneous reporting (in both directions) reported anecdottaly, ultimately the record of the pandemic death numbers is going to be driven by statistics like these, as all previous epidemics/pandemics have.
As the rates of both begin to drop, there are going to be some busy statisticians examining data. I am sure we will get conflicting numbers for the rest of our lives.
