The "virus" What are your thoughts

Well, we’re not canceling our Spring Break vacay. Flights, hotels, restaurants, and big tips for everyone.
Gonna work on my bikini lines for boating season. :D

MY SIL is the head coach of a D2 BB team in the playoffs. Just found out that the games will be played this weekend in empty arenas. Just seems to me that this hole virus thing is being blown out of proportion. But that's just me.

If you can, reach out to some contacts you might have in Italy and see what they are experiencing.

The info I've been getting from people over there is they too thought things were blown out of proportion until it hit them fast and hard.

Dr. Fauci alluded to sports events without spectators when he spoke to Congress today. Perhaps that influenced the decision makers. I think it's a smart move... Social distancing and containment are needed to stay in front of this. Now, hopefully we can get full testing ramped up to get better tracking.

Something is wrong in Italy. From what I can gather, their mortality numbers are something like 20%. Much higher than everywhere else.

My wife just told me the NBA suspended the remainder of their season because one player on the Utah Jazz tested positive for the Corona virus.

IMHO that makes sense. The only way to get this thing under control is to get ahead of it and stop/slow its spread.

The irony in all of this is that the people who think this is "no big deal" may be proven right if the people who are "overreacting" are successful in stemming the spread of the virus. ;)

That’s a good statement... I am in the no big deal column but I am still diligent in washing my hands and not going to public places or events...stopping employee travel etc.... the overreacting side seems to be over the top...for example my neighborhood is passing around a petition to close all the schools in the area and setting up safe places in their homes for family members to go that might be in an infected home .... but the people with the safe places say it’s kind of high risk because they are in the medical field... nurses. I have a tough time with that

Big difference between diligence and hysteria.

I've seen this thread, but haven't really bothered to read it too much. So I apologize if I repeat anything that's already been said.

For any Canadian folks, whatever you hear in the media.. don't believe it. The government clearly doesn't care and is somehow probably making profit off of this. A friend of mine who plays hockey in the South Korea just got home because his playoffs were cancelled. You would think he would be screened or at least questioned before coming back into Canada.. Nah not even questioned one bit. I think that is insane considering how serious the virus is in S.Korea. Unfortunately it's just going to get worst until it just randomly disappears.

Oh well.
Maybe the NHL will shorten it's season and I won't have to watch my Leafs choke and miss the playoffs

It seems the big issue is overloading the health care providers. That's where Italy is now, more sick than they can handle. People die that could survive if they could get the medical help they need. Italy is near a triage situation, their system capacity is maxed out.

I guess I'm in the no big deal side but for almost all of my adult life I have been taking care of others in need. Sick, burned, cut up, shot, you name it. I'm more worried about those in the Fire and Rescue as well as PD. They have to deal with this bug while John Q Public can try to hide.

Yes I am concerned for my family but I'm not slipping into panic mode. I'm not sheltering in place but I'm also not going into crowded locations.

I guess, in my mind it comes down to this. Do what you think is best for you! If you are sick, stay home! Need a medic, call we one will come to you without hesitation

Went to my local grocery store to pick up a salad this morning, as I do during mornings when I go to the office and I'm not on the road, and it was packed with people loading up on TP, water, paper towels, Bisquick.......... They opened a new checkout aisle and I jumped ahead with my salad, and got the stink-eye from some lady with a cart full of provisions. I guess I was suppose to wait 20 minutes for her and her cart of TP and disinfectant.

I know I'm speaking to the choir but here's some advice, don't decide to stock up on provisions when there is a crisis, maybe do that beforehand. Just sayin'.o_O

I have been looking at Italy closely because they seem to be an aberration. They have an elderly population, heavy smoking, and kiss when they greet. Not a good combo for this virus.

Hopefully people will stop criticizing the US healthcare system. I’ve traveled for work to hospitals throughout LATAM, EU, Nordics, UK, Canada.

I wouldn’t want to get sick in any of those countries. You’d be shocked at their sterilization standards. Some countries don’t even follow expiration dates on disposable items.

I got a mean stomach bug in Brazil. Wasn’t fun. They gave me prescription antibiotic and I didn’t need a prescription. I mentioned to the cardiologist that I felt sick, told him my symptoms, wrote a word on a plain slip of paper, sent me to a window down the hall, handed it to the clerk who came back w a tiny paper cup w a pill in it. I desperately sucked it down and that was it. Hope for the best. It was no charge of course.

60 Minutes did a piece on antibiotics in India. You can walk into a street shop and get basically any kind of antibiotic you want, even really powerful ones that are last-defense drugs. No 'script needed. This approach effectively creates and exports antibiotic resistant diseases.

When we were in France a couple of years ago I went into two pharmacies and bought Codeine pills over the counter. I rarely use them but just figured it was not worth a trip to my doc to get a script for them. I got 100 pills for the equivalent of about $10US.
