The Turtle goes south

Winterizing in Charleston is not wearing sunscreen.

Oh well, you may not winterize, but doesn't mean it's a good thing. Last year I was in Orlando during Christmas break. On few nights we had 29degrees. In a morning, I had to wait for my windows to defrost before I can drive the car. Some days it only reached 49deg. during the day. We were not expecting that in FL. So, considering that Charlston is a good 6hrs ride north all I can say that your boats better be prepared for some mather nature's surprise.

The last thing we want for Mike to spend all that time and money to get the boat in the south region and then have some damages due to unexpected freezing nights.

Some more pics.

So of you wanted to see my camera setup when I was streaming video. here it is. The Owle Bubo with a fish eye lens. an adjustable arm clamped onto the Bimini pole.

First Stop was in Cape May at Utch's marina. still don't know how to say it. Mostly fishing boats in here and skinny water. Bow in only on this side of the marina.

The Next stop was BIH. Great waterfront marina. Actually the whole downtown has great waterfront.

Leaving BIH in the morning. No idea how foggy it was out in the bay.

A Tanker appearing out of the fog.

I think there's a bridge up ahead

This was basically all we saw for the whole day

Stopped in the Solomon Islands for the night. We really loved this spot.

Battleship being docked. The freaky thing when you are passing one of these things is that there are about 3 machine guns on you the whole time. I was afraid to take a picture for fear of pissing them off.

photo-79.jpg

Next stop was Ocean Marina. Not much of a view but a comfortable marina and they had dog treats so pig dog liked it.

Anchored and having lunch waiting for the lock to open.

photo-83.jpg

Windlass wouldn't haul in the chain so I had to pull it up by hand and clip the safety strap to hold it there.

photo-82.jpg

The lock filling with water.

Pig dog taking a pee break while we're waiting for the lock to fill. This was a great stop, super nice lock man.

poking our way through the swamp. This was the day Gary said I was going to die. look at how still the water is.

photo-91.jpg

Going through the South Lock. This guy wasn't so nice. I think we woke him from his nap.

photo-93.jpg

Tied up in Elizabeth.

photo-96.jpg

Bright and early in the morning waiting for the bridge to open.

Next stop was Swan Point Marina. I would recommend passing this one by.

Waiting for a bridge to open. By this time we were catching up to the late departing sailboats heading south.

Going through the swing bridge north of Myrtle Beach

Typical view of NC as you idle all day.

Waccamaw River. Ahhhhhh. In this pic you can see what looks like a pile of leaves. Actually it was a little john boat covered in leaves and branches. I thought it was a tree until a guy poked out of it. Scared the crap out of me.

Last year was cold! By the looks of it, I think it will be cold this year also. I had mine on trailer in backyard and had a heater in the cabin and cockpit and left engine hatch up. I have remote start on my truck and started it before shower every morning because of ice on windows and takes my diesel longer to warm up!

Great photos.......Could you have stayed outside the whole way down or weather dictated that you hit the ICW

I'm like you, Chuck. I never even saw boiled peanuts in a can. Bet they are soggy mush.

The real southerner buys them on the side of the road out of a pick up bed being sold by Bubba or Bubbette with fewer than 32 teeth.

In Carabelle, Fl, it's from Bubbette in a re-cycled clothing store on the North side of 98. Yes, less than 32 teeth, raspy voice from smoking, pencil skinny from smoking crack, leathery skin...

If you read down the thread he sold it...

Ken,

I think you're mixing post #7 with post #8. In that thread ididtdoit sold his, but Henry chimed in that he also has one. I don't see anything else where it says that Henry sold it as well.

Well I consider your Marina the starting point. A home away from home.

It seemed like this time of year the weather just wasn't great. Lots of wind. We probably could have jumped outside more but didn't. It's not a bad run at all until about Cape Fear, then it gets painfully slow until the Waccamaw river. There's so many great places to see and stop at that it would be a shame to miss them. Leaving earlier is probably better weather but more sailboats so running on the outside more would be our choice in NC and SC.

As you know, the staff at Dom's Marina consider it a requirement for Gitana and crew to stop in whenever you're in the area...by land or sea.

The staff might feel that way, but, the company Controller wants to know where the check is for the week's worth of transient dockage...

yeah, but that's Gary. I've already ordered a coal oven. I just need to find a place that I can cut a hole in the side of the boat for an exhaust pipe. I wonder if I can burn the boiled peanuts shells...

You BIG BOAT guys need to move down here in FL, we don't know about any bilge heaters!!

I was thinking more of oil pan heaters. Gary, do you have both pan heaters and bilge heater?
