The Official Whiskey And Spirits Thread.

I've been slowly building up my collection of bourbon and whiskey. So far my favorites are Knoble, Basil Hayden Dark Rye and Old Forester Statesman. Honorable mention to Woodford reserve straight and Double Oaked. I don't much care for most rye's other than Basil's dark rye.
I would like to start a collection but I don't out of deference to my youngest. He is recovering and bourbon was his drink of choice. So I am limited to what I can fit in my gun safe. He's almost 4 years out, so I'm not too worried, just don't want to rub his face in it.

My daughter just went down to Louisville to pickup her case of makers mark last weekend. They bought a keg 6 years ago. They got to bottle it and dip the cork in wax. The cool thing is makers mark sent them presents every year at Christmas ….. bottle sweaters, glasses just cool small presents

Nice Buddy, I had the opportunity to do the same. Waited a long time, got reservations by the distillery, then fell into the abyss of work, kids, parents and completely forgot until the hotel hit my CC for the room. They were very accommodating as was MM, didn’t get my name on a bottle but did get a nice “Ambassador” certificate with the barrel plate picture on it. Still get the little goodies in the mail. I slide more to the 46 side as I like the mellowness of it.

Edit, pictures or it didn't happen.

So one weekend two years ago on the island a guy starts filling up a picnic table with bourbon….. right behind my boat. At that same time I have a good friend on board who is a bourbon expert. I said to him ….. Mike check this out…. Mike immediately goes down below and grabs the two bottles he brought and we walk over and sit down with 6 other strangers and start a taste testing. Probably one of the most fun times I have had…. Laughing, telling jokes, stories… just a great afternoon. The ring leader of this after that runs rendezvous all over the Great Lakes and Florida in the winter. We exchange contact info and he has invited me to every rendezvous after that….. we have gone to some really cool places. This weekend is Sandusky for bike week…..impossible to get in but somehow he gets us in right downtown. So I tried to get my bourbon buddy Mike to come but he couldn’t swing it. So he overnited me this bottle and said so you don’t embarrass yourself bringing liquor store bourbon ….. I thought that was so nice and kinda hurtful at the same time. :) :)

So the bourbon was a huge hit with Ron….. this is a guy that has been around a long time and has so many connections. It’s just amazing to be part of his boating group. It took maybe an hour to get into the bourbon. In the end a half bottle later….He ended up taking a nap……. That was all the verification I needed….. I’m now officially a fork in a weenie club member…. What ever that is. I have a little kids undershirt burgee hanging in my boat now…… funny as Phuck

there are some stranger great boaters out there still….. you need to take the time and stop to say hello….. you’ll be amazed….. not everytime but more often then not….. try it

Just re-read this, ordered a bottle, it’s not inexpensive but it doesn’t break the bank either. I’m looking forward to it.

When the Queen and I are hanging out, I announce “I’m going out to make friends” she rolls her eyes but like you said more times than not we have a gathering at the boat and you can’t catch your breath because the Queen is sucking up all the O2. Make friends, have fun!

There are many good bourbons, but my experience is the best are from Kentucky. Theses two happen to be my favorite. The only problem is they are rare and difficult to find. Buffalo Trace has both on allocation. As an example, the 12 year Weller Black is around $40 retail. Being sold in the after market for $280. It pays to have friends in the liquor distribution business. :p

I picked up a bottle of this and going to try some with my buddy after customer pheasant hunting tomorrow.

Also picked up some Whistle Pig and Old Forrester as give’aways for the event.

Not sure what I’ll have for deer opener this weekend. Maybe water ;)
