The official pre-clinton era sr sport cruiser thread

Why??? You got up really early!!! :wow:

I was just into my lunch break!:grin::grin:

Thats right, It was early, for some reason I was thinking you were -6 instead you are + our time. I was thinking it was like MN or 1AM. DUH! I was already at work when I posted, I'm an early bird!

Hope that turns out to be a mutually advantageous thing!

JJ, The boat only has 500 hrs on it. What I meant is I spent 1000 hrs restoring it. New cockpit, strpped bottom, 3000.00 stereo, all new teak outside, removed and refinished rub rail, stripped windshield frame, stretched platform, windlass, removed all stripes, wetsand and buff entire boat, and the list goes on. You gotta love these old girls. Dave

Hi Dave
I would say you really did go through the old girl. Yeah, I enjoy taking an older boat and sprucing her up to just buying a fancy one out of the box too. With as short a season as we have up here it does not make sense to me to make big payments on something that is stored away as much as it is used. Great looking boat you have there.
John

Sounds familiar! Redoing the cockpit has been on my mind. I cant afford to do it all in starboard, I was looking at some PVC board called Azek that we played around with. You can glue and staple to it. I was planning on getting a thicker piece to check how flexible it may be. As long as whatever covers it is in good shape it should last forever.
I just did all my striping this winter, what a PITA!

I know it is going to sound like a stupid question guys but can someone tell me what the proper method is to check the tranny fluid on an 87 300 Weekender? What is the recommended fluid in it and what is the change interval. I have looked in the owners manual and unless I missed it I didn't see anything.

John - no such thing as a stupid question! For my old boat, the manual says Dexron/Mercon II. I use D/M III (not sure they even make II anymore). You can overspend for Mercruiser stuff but it's plain old ATF available in Pep Boys or Walmart. I can't speak for certain about your v-drives (I have straight) but there's a dipstick on the transmission somewhere, probably with a T-handle. You unscrew it and pull it out. To change, you use a fluid extractor to suck out the old fluid through the dipstick, and then fill it back up through the same hole. I change mine every other year - not sure what the recommended interval is. I check it every week. Smell it, wipe it with a clean white napkin to get a sense of the color (cherry red) and to see if there's any water in it (frothey and white) - this would be very bad. I don't know if you have a filter on your trannys. I do not. Some models do.

One question about the trannys (in your boat, not walking the streets!) Which ones do you have? Ron is correct on the procedure for the Hurth/ZF trans. My friend has a 88 300 Weekender and his has the BW velvet drives. I can't tell you anything about them, but I know there are differences (like the BW doesn't have any filter). If you have the Hurth/ZF do a search for trans filter change, there is a good write-up, I think by Turtletone, or Turtlesboat.

Thanks Ron and Wilee
Of Course I left out that pertinant information. I have straight shaft not V drives (the front of my engines face forward) and the screws set up in a tunnel.

From what I was told they are velvet drives although I have not verified this as of yet by finding a tag. Also the survey from my recollection referred to them as velvet drives. I will continue my search. I wasn't sure if they were to be checked cold or warm.

New Boats (New to me) are always fun to try and figure out. Crawling through the ER and all the other nook and crannies trying to find out what you wish you knew about your vessel

Thanks Capt Ron and Wilee
The fabric below has already been changed and I am glad about that. The only cushions not yet recovered are the ones for when you convert the dinette to a sleeper but that is in the works as the previous owner gave me more than enough fabric for that task.

My biggest project in the near future will be to add a Genny because she was built without one. I really want to do it before spring. Another undertaking (hopefully within 2 weeks) is to replace the breaker blowing Benson Windlass with a Lewmar V 700. I have to check the pre load on the PPS Dripless packings but i think I have to haul out for that (don't I?).

Her Name is the "C-Hunter" C is the first initial of my last name and Hunter is the name of my Boxer pup.

The first one is Moored where I bought her and the last 2 are where we moore now. She is all lettered and renamed(yeah... I went through the ritual) and I will upload the picture of the lettering later today.

Looks like you bought her in newburgh, and now you got her up at catskill creek.. I got the same boat.. we do some overnights up at your marina.. I will look for you the next time i am up there..

Yup... Thats Her. She used to be called Quick Silver and she used to belong to Paul M. I am in a slip right in front of the condo's where the last ramp goes up to them heading in from the river. Slip 9. She's been good so far. hopefully she will stay that way for a while.
