The Book - Four Suns

Looking forward to it.

I'm surprised at how much of a cut Amazon takes. And your Printer takes a percentage? or are you basing it on how much you are selling it for and how many copies you're printing? Basically you get hosed and everyone else makes a 50% return.

EXACTLY!!!! The printer is a fixed cost... and since I'm not doing print-on-demand (don't like the quality), it's a big upfront cost.

Just wait until you add up all of the marketing and advertising costs. It'll make the printing cost seem like a fart in a hurricane.

Have you talked to a distributor, one that specializes in Marine books or nautical books? Someone to get it in all of the little marina stores and big ones like West Marine?

I would love an autographed copy too. Its going to be a great book to read, autographed or not, put me down for a copy. :)

Pretty discouraging story. I’m sure it’s going to be a great read. It would be a shame not to get it published. But with that said, I wouldn’t dump too much of your own money into it. The economy is in the toilet and the boating population is small segment of the total market so you have a very limited target audience.

I have to imagine that book sales are going to suffer big time. (Unless you can get Obama to make it a required read at all the schools or Oprah to endorse it). In fact, I just read an article today on MSN entitled the “10 things you shouldn’t buy new” and books were on the list.

What about breaking up the book into individual articles and sell them to a magazine as a freelance writer? I think you could be a huge hit as a freelance for Boating Magazine. Your writing style not only adds value, but you do it with a sense of humor that is missing from most articles.

Good luck with how ever it turns out, and you can add me to the list of pre-orders.

Maybe I'll start writing for Sea Ray Living... Get rid of all those perfectly dressed people docking their boats and riding their jets... Show the dogs playing tug-of-war with the wife's bra instead.

I heard thru the grapevine they love to read in the Bahamas. Bring some books and join us for the Memorial day trip.
I'm sure you will post when they come out of publication so we can PM as to how to buy.
Congrats and thanks for all your help over the years.
Jack

I know, Give a case of books to a boater in each area and have them place the books in the marinas they visit. Give them 30% for each book that sells. It can go viral.

Gary,
First let me say Don't give up. If it was easy we all could write & publish a book.

Secondly, I'd ask you to revisit your original objective. Was it to make large profits? To share knowledge? Maybe just something to do? Do you still desire those same objectives?

If so, compare your objectives against the upfront cost of printing X# of books (maybe whatever your current printer's minimum run is). If you are still in, then screw Amazon and the rest of the profit sucking leaches. Find a way to distribute the books yourself and make it happen.

I am encourageing you to think about and entertain other publication ideas & options because Amazon (or whoever) does not care about, nor can they meet your original objectives.

I have some experience & exposure in the printing/publication arena and I can guarantee you this ... as I mentioned earlier, If it was easy we all could do it.

Good luck.
Of course I'll buy some copies.
Thanks for sharing all you do here on CSR.

Michael

Or show the dogs playing tug-of-war with Wingless...

You could always look at it as a public service and think of the book as a warm tingly feeling running up your leg.
