Hi, Has anyone ever look into doing a "Dock swap" for a limited time, like people swap vacation homes?
For example: I am on Long Island NY. across from Fire Island 10ft wide slip ( 8 1/2 beam) with Electric & Water and am looking to go to Mystic Conn. I would have no problem with someone using my slip for a few days as an exchange.
I would notify the people next to me ect.. I guess some up-scale marinas would ban such things since there would be no money in it for them

I believe it is frowned upon for legal and insurance reasons, it is considered similar to sub-letting, as the guests in you slip are not contract signing members of the marina.

Just my .02 cents though

Our Marina uses your slip for transients when you're not using it.

Hmmmmmm. legal and insurance reasons? Trying to think what would those would be? Each person is responsible for there own boat so if my guest breaks something, like he Pulls away with out disconnecting the Electric I guess I would have to pay. If he hits my neighbor, he would pay just the same as any one going up and down the canal would be responsible. Just trying to think what changes from him staying there and me? JG

I've found in the Boston area the amount of transient slip space that is available is most often equal to the number of seasonal slip holders who are away cruising with their boats. I guess it qualifies as double-dipping by the marina operator, although I am sure they would argue the additional revenue keeps slip fees down for the regulars.

Your slip assignment agreement will say something to the effect of "you must notify marina when you are not going to be in your slip" and "the marina has the rights to assign transient boats to your slip" and "boats other than the assigned are not permitted in your slip"...........I know when i am away, I have to wait until 11:00 am for check out time to get back in my slip if a boat was put into my slip while away........1) insurance 2) money maker 3) tip maker 4) good business.........not in that order

I'm at the same Marina as Wetpaint.

I'm pretty sure that wording is in my contract as well. My marina rented out my slip last year when I went to Atlantic City over the 4th of July weekend.

Well I have nothing to do with any legal aspects. My marina also will lease my slip to transits, but before they do you can bet the transit user has to go to the office and sign a contract. By insurance I was referring to someone possibly slipping or claiming they lost something or had it destroyed and wants the marina to pay.

The question the marina will probably ask is why were they trespassing, if you are not there, or your boat, then why are they there? Cannot be guest.

I do not write any of these laws or contracts, just my opinion.

For those who dock at marinas that rent slips out to transients, what experiences have you had with theft, vandalism, etc?

I've been put into other people's slips as a transient. I try to leave it exactly the way that I found it. I ask my guests not to disturb any lines that may be on the dock or pilings, and I always use my own lines. Hopefully, when the slip holder returns he will be able to follow his normal docking procedure.

My contract says: "Lessee shall advise the office of time period of non-use of the slip in excess of 48 Hrs. Any slip not occupied may be rented temporarily through the management office on a day to day basis. Any such slip will be available for its regular lessee with 24 hours after notice of intent to re-occupy the slip is received by the management office."

It also says slips are non-transferrable, no other boat may occupy the slip.

But when I take the boat out for a long trip and tell the office, they always tell me thanks, but they would never rent my slip to a transient.

Jack F...You have never come over to see me?????? D -Dock.....

I leave my lines and fender balls at the slip and EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS IN tact....

I’ve only been at this marina a little more than 1 yr, the 1st thing I was told by a few neighbors was not to worry about theft or anyone messing with your boat, they also have 24hr security
Onsite.

I'll have to stop by this year, D dock.. Isn’t that were they have the big signs saying SLIP HOLDER AND GUEST ONLY NO TRESPASSING?
I’m at J-Dock.. Our sign says no open flames and clean up after your pet.

If want to avoid paying for transcient slips, I would get dingy and find places to anchor... I remember some nice anchoring spots on the CT River and on the North shore of LI...

Consider this - I know certain marinas that meter the electric and charge the seasonal slip renter and also rent out the slip to transients, not charging them for the electric. Slip renter pays?
Regarding the actual slip, depending on your relationship with the marina, just dont tell them your leaving or tell them you dont know how long you will be gone. Or do tell, up to you isnt it?
I put some thought into the slip swap concept years ago, not to long before Brewers Marinas offered the "swap" to thier clients. Maybe get the yards to work out reciprical agreements with other yards as added benefits to thier seasonal renters - a marketing tool. Otherwise it might be feasable for all those dockaminium owners out there to create a swap network, with proper insurance of course. Just thoughts.

Here Here! And I thought I was the first one to think of it!! ( Just jumped up like Nancy Pelouse. Ugh.) Let me be clear.... :)
