Swapped cabin lights to LED

I have swapped out many of my halogen dc lights with LEDs in my 2000 480 Sedan Bridge. I do like them, they a brighter, use 1/10th the watts and generate much less heat. One concern I have is the safety. I mostly buy from Amazon, but I bought a batch of 6 dimable LEDs, and used one in the non-disable fixture, and it caught fire, but not right away. It was after using it several times over a few days. I was quite surprised, so to be safe, I threw out all 6 and put the halogens back in. I tried to find UL listed LEDs for the g4 mount, but I could not find any. I ended up buying through Amazon again but a different brand, and everything seemed OK, I have only had the one issue, and I have installed about 27 LEDs, including 4 dimable, so I am not sure how concerned I should be, but it still makes me a little nervous. I did see recently that Lowes sells some 12 volt LEDs with the G4 mount, and though more expensive, seem to be better engineered that the wafer style I was using. I bought 2, but have not installed them yet. I still have about 16 to replace.

These are "potted" in silicone. If I have any issues, I'll be sure to post it.
I bought similar LEDs for my landscape lighting, as that had the halogens too, only they are AC.

I read Wayne's link and the seller specifically says cant be used with a halogen transformer . How do we know if we have a transformer ?

Rob

Lots and lots of folks buy from Amazon vendors and elsewhere with great success, but I've been extra conservative and have used solely Marinebeam for replacement bulbs. They have a decent range of both bulbs and fixtures, including multiple G4 options, and are happy to explain the technology in each so you can decide what suits your needs best, whether subbing for incandescent, halogen, whatever.

They run on 12 volts DC, so there is no transformer on the boat. You can't use them in your AC lighting circuit. For landscape lighting there is a transformer which puts out 12 volts AC (which they won't run on).

I am about 90% done changing mine out to LED. It is amazing how much brighter the "cave" is with them in.

Burned up 16 foot of rope lighting in the cockpit area but it is great at night at the dock. Also ran it down the sides to light up the floor

i just installed these a couple of weeks ago. they look purple in the pic but blue in person. not sure why. i still have a few more left to install

Anyone know what bulbs are in the wall mounted lights in the Vberth and locker closet ?

Rob
The wall reading lights are G4 halogen. I posted the LED replacement. I don't have a locker closet, so I can't help you there.

Wayne,

Just so I'm sure about which light bulbs these replace, you're say they replace the one in the ceiling fixtures in the picture below?

Wayne,
I have 75 % failure rate on those bulbs .... 2 didn't even work out of the box ... rest blew out during the course of the first nite.

NOT GOOD .. sending them all back

I'm now looking at Marinebeam.com

I have a stupid question so be easy on me. I have a 95 330 that is new to me. I just don't know the boat well at this point. Can anyone tell me what bulbs would be in the swivel lights I have in the cabin and berths? Would the G4's work in those lights.
