Last week a fellow boater 'helped' me anchor in a remote area of a sandy lake. He told me the best way to keep her straight while anchoring in shallow, sandy water is to point the bow towards the waves, throw an anchor out and lower the outdrive into the sand to keep the boat straight. I told him that I didn't want to risk damage to my OD and would pass on his suggestion (but thanks anyway).

My question is: who uses their outdrive as a second anchor in sandy conditions? Is this a normal practice?

That guy shouldn't even be boating let alone giving advice:wow: That gets the biggest WTF to date. Use a cheap stern anchor and save your outdrive, skeg and prop for their intended purpose (propultion).

Not me, Was your "Fellow Boater" an out-drive mechanic that is looking for work:smt009.

He was an older Italian guy (nothing against them) who thought he had a good idea (apparently). I think he was too busy worring about his golden brown woman's (*)(*) than damage to his outdrive. Glad to hear that I am not crazy!

On a side note, do you guy's use those outdrive clips to save wear and tear on your unit while on dry land?

If the water is that shallow, you'll only need about 10' of rode when anchoring. Let her swing in the breeze.

No way would I use my OD as a rear anchor.

Alpha outdrive - $5,000
basic anchor-rode - $50

Stupid tax for using the drive as the anchor - $4,950

Not ruining your vacation by listening to a stuipd fat guy and his (*)(*) girlfriend - priceless

Yes, wise decision not to listen to the fat guy, even if you got off light and broke skeg and dinged prop you are still out $200.00 to $300.00 for repairs and lost time boating. :smt038

I have used a small mushroom anchor off the stern. If there is a lot of wind then I think you are better off letting the boat move in the wind without a stern anchor.

always carry a spare anchor with a 100 feet of line. I use a fortress ass my rear anchor and always leave at least 2 feet of water between my drive and the bottom.

the only thing this guy told you that was remotely correct was point the boat into the waves (i guess he meant the wind). if you're anchoring out and going swimming in water shallow enuff to stick your drive into, swim forward and set the anchor with your feet or hands. if you're not you can give a shot of reverse to set the anchor. all you need is one dumb a$$ (usually in the form of a PWC driver) to come flying past you throwing a wake. boat goes up, drive comes out of sand, boat comes down, drive smashes into the bottom. :smt100

Yeah, I think you knew already to not use the leg.

My friend anchors off the beach frequently on the Columbia River in Eastern Washington.

This little thing, "the Sand Spike" is really nice for keeping the stern to shore, but not on it.

I'm more of a visual person, so for me to better understand this thread can you please post pictures of "golden brown woman's (*)(*) ". Thanks,

I wish I had some pic's, but I was with the wife and kids. She doesn't appreciate me taking pictures of (*)(*) let alone golden brown ones! LOL. She did nudge me a few times and tell me to pay attention to what she was saying. My ADD distracts me sometimes.

I use a spiral spike that they sell as a dog tie out at Petsmart. You can get the large dog style for $10 and they work great.

Alot of folks in my area use 3in pvc in with an auger bit screwd in one side and a tee at the top with two 1ft peices coming out each side with caps on them. .
