Stuffing box shaft log packing

I installed GTU Gore Shaft Packing [blend of W.L. Gore and graphite fibers filled with PTFE ( Teflon )] in June.

Zero leaks, drips, or problems. Cost me about $60 [including teflon grease] to do 2 shafts, 1.5 inches in diameter.

I would never use the old style flax packing again.

Perfect !! Now I know what I can look forward to.

Thanks
Ken

I installed my own. Used a long metal screw and a pair ofvice grips to get the old stuffing out. When installing the Gor-tex handtighten the cover retighten afterrunning it. As I stated before I have had hardly any dripping in the bilge andhave not had to retighten them as often as the old ones.

If you just need to borrow one, just say the word..

Speakrdude - I spoke with my FIL this morning he has a tool and knows how to remove and pack it. I guess now I am glad I married his daughter. I'll probably fix it in the spring.

I forwarded your installation advice to the marina. I am having them do the install this time around as I want to make sure the shaft alignment is correct as well. Not having any running issues however I insist on benchmarking by having professional maintenance done on the boat so I know where I am starting from. As I gain experience and knowledge I expect to be doing the majority of work myself.

Thanks
Ken

It is installed exactly like old-style flax packing. Use the cork-screw tool to remove all the old stuff. Clean the shaft and gland out with clean rags and acetone. Cut the packing at an angle, not at 90 degrees. Stagger the pieces 180 degrees so that the ends of each piece are on the opposite side of the shaft as the last piece.

I used 1/4 " packing. Go to the GTU website to determine the correct size for your shaft.

I have no idea why to use the teflon grease. The GTO website and instructions say to use it liberally. Good enough for me.
