Storage Question

Ok heres my situation. I am expecting a new born in 7 months!... Now heres how it gets complicated. I have my 07 185 sport in my garage at the present time and it looks just as good as the day it came out of the showroom!. But now i have to give up my office to make it a room for my newborn and turn the garage into a room to put my office/hangout. The question is. Im planning on putting my boat at my moms house about 5 mins away in her backhard under one of those huge white plastic (i think its plastic) carports that you build out of white tubing. Is this enough protection or is my boat gonna look faded like an oldschool pirateship after a few years? Any other suggestions? And im trying not to put it in storage and have that monthly bill..

Thanks ahead..--C rock

If I’m reading your solution correctly, I’d say it is more than adequate coverage; this coming from the Valley of The Sun where most boats bake, including ours, for 8 plus months out of the year. It sounds like you take very good care of your equipment to begin with, so if you keep the gel coat waxed/moisturized, you’ll be fine IMO…….dust will take you a bit to get used to, given you’ll be in an outdoor environment now.

yea hopefully i can find one of those portable ports that is sealed good!.. anyone have any ports in mind that they prefer?

crock;

if your talking about putting it under a sun shade style car port, look for the ones that have the side panels and this will help with the baking sun we have here in FL. your maintanence needs will still go up cause you will have to deal with air born polutants that you don't deal with now which will collect on the surface of the hull so get in the custom of going by once a week and hoseing off the bot if nothing else.

and since this is you're first child I would recommend that you service the boat and put if away at your mom's like it's going to be their a while without moving; becuase it will.

cr0ck1,

I keep my 230 Select under one of those carports at my inlaws house. It is an aluminum carport like you would park an RV under. What I did was buy a sharkskin cover from Boaters World. They have them on sale right now for 50% off. Mine was about $150.00.

In the winter I took everything out carpet etc. Cleaned the boat and put it up with the sharkskin cover only. I left the cockpit cover and mooring covers off. Place the cover on tight and made sure there were no sagging areas in the cover. This way if rain does get on the boat from blowing storms it rolls right off.

In the Summer I just make sure the boat is dry and clean a little more often. The area I keep my boat is fairly shaded and gets good coverage from the carport.

My boat actualy stays cleaner there then when I had it in dry storage at the marina. The biggest thing is making sure water stays out of the boat to prevent mildew. The sharkskin cover is not 100% waterproof but it does breath well.

I hope this helps and congrats on the new little one:smt038. I have 3 and they are great. Also my toddler loves the boat.

Hey cRock,
It's been awhile, I hope all is well.
So, I used to store the 230OV in one. It had the side curtains as suggested above.

It worked great. If you have a Costco nearby, they usually have them for around $175.00. I don't see them on their site.

Best of luck

I've seen the one with the sides at either costco or sams I don't remember which but they are both across the street from each other in clearwater. If you don't have a membership let me know I'll go with you to check it out I have a membership to all three costco, sam's and bj's

I have to store mine outside, I only use a blue tarp from Harbor Freight with 2 vents in it that I got from Overtons and I have no problems other than I rinse off the exposed part at times and when I uncover it takes about 10 min to get a few spots from the interior. My first boat sat in the exact same spot for 17 years and still looked good when I traded it on the one I have now. Your cover set up should be fine.

Finish off the garage real nice like. Keep the boat in the garage. Keep your office / hideaway that you have now. Put the wife and kid in the PVC constructed lean-to at Mom’s place.

You need to keep your priorities right man. :thumbsup:

Crock;

Pep Boys has the shelters with the side panels. I've been kind of eyeing them trying to figure out a way I could put on on my lift to have the boat out of the sun; but haven't come up with a good idea yet. I might just breakdown and buy a lift cover from Bay Dock. Don't know yet.

Keep the garage as a garage. Add a shed to the "backhard" and convert that to an office. It's an easier conversion. The distance from the house will be a plus.

Frank has the plan, I don't know why I did not think of it cause I have a little building set at the end of my back porch, I insulated and paneled it, white ceiling tile and a light colored tile on the floor, wifes sister has on in her back yard that is her office. They work real good.

Here is where mine is going to be from March until September/October.

Not a big deal, I dont think to leave it out :huh:

Move your office in the cockpit of your boat.....lots of help anit I?

You might be on to something there, get a BIGGER! boat and put it under the business as your office and make it a business expense and write it off.
