I'm sooooooo friggin pissed right now.:smt013:smt013:smt013 My oldest son is a disc jockey and last night we had a "gig" to play at a club for a party. My son was busy during the early hours of the gig so I filled in till he got there. (I'm an old school dj from the early 80's). So the gig was a birthday party for a local jock (my personal friend) on the radio and also a former Saints player. Everything went well while we were performing in the VIP room on the 3rd floor of the club. Then all of a sudden the bottom fell out of the party on the 1st and 2nd floors (the other dj was from out of town and couldn't move the crowd). So to the rescue we come after a minor tear down of equipment and re-rigging to the house p.a. sytem. So my son has the crowd rolling on the dance floor, and I said well it's 3:30 a.m., I'm tired and a little drunk let me get my sh!t and go my drunk a$$ home. I go back upstairs to pack up my laptop and the son of a gun is gone along with the charger. Immediately I ran back to the second floor and grabbed the mic and made the announcement and all hell broke loose. Everyone that was still there was searched as well as their vehicles including the staff. I offered $500 cash for the safe return with no questions asked and got no response.

I'm just venting cuz i really feel like my top's gonna blow any second now.:smt024:smt013:smt024:smt013:smt013

I'm thinking about all the pictures, music and whatever else was on there that I lost. I sit in my den every single morning and evening seeing what's new with CSR and I feel like a part of me has died. I'm on my youngest son's laptop now. So all I'm saying to my SR friends is, If you have a Laptop, take a minute to buy some sort of Lojack for your computer. I hope that someone will find it in their heart to return my MacBook once they see all of my family photos cuz I DIDN'T HAVE LOJACK!!!!!!! But you can bet your a$$ when I get the next one it's gonna have it. Peace brothers and sisters:thumbsup:

Sorry for your loss -- that really sucks. Your story is an endorsement for making regular backups.

In addition to LoJack you should try something like Mozy or even MobileMe. LoJack won't do squat if your computer crashes or the house burns down.

Good luck -- hope you get it back.

Contact Apple and let them know it was stolen.

If not encrypted and the creep can get access to your email account on your puter, email your computer and offer a reward for its safe return...

Slight chance it may be found but unlikely...

And, once you have your backup solution (I use an external drive) test it. Many people think they have backups, until they go to restore and find that what they've been backing up is useless.

Yes, the worst thing is all the "stuff" on the computer you lost. I learned that lesson when my Dell crashed and I lost all my data. Spent 1500 bucks for a lab to recover it. I now have multiple external backup systems just for that reason.

Had someone snag my $2000.00 Canon camera and lenses in LAX back in the summer. Really PO'd me thinking about the loser that walked off with it, viewed my vacation pics, then simply deleted them for his/her own greedy use. The feeling of violation makes you want to get violent!

I was at Dulles airport a few years ago outside of the security area. I had to take a wiz and went into the Men's room and put my computer bag against the wall 1 foot from me. As soon as I started to piss, a guy grabbed my bag and took off running out of the Men's room... Needless to say, I took off after him while trying to get my tallywhacker back in the barn... he dropped the bag outside in the middle of the street/passenger drop off area and the cops nabbed my bag and caught him... I think I left a pee trail about 12 feet from the urinal... it's hard to stop once you start...

So... if you really want to rip off someone, wait till they start pissing at the urinal...

Only in DC...

Some of the stuff with "one click" logins installed on your laptop are scary things. Someone gets your laptop, and you can be totally screwed as the bank may not reimburse you and you'll have to fight with an insurance company for theft... seen this before. The people that develop things like this: https://pip.verisignlabs.com/ think that your computer will never have anyone else sitting in front of it... and if they are... they have full access to your world.

Still no word on it yet, and It's setting in on me now that I probably won't get it back. The club didn't have cameras in the VIP section.:smt013

There's always full disk encryption too. Nothing is 100% but encryption will likely protect you from a snatch-and-run thug looking to pawn your machine. Forget about encryption, a password will stop most idiot thieves.

Whether you're a Mac or PC, there are 2 important lessons:
1) Daily backups. Offsite is ideal.
2) If your laptop is your primary/only system then it must be encrypted. If it's not your primary machine then don't keep anything of value on it.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Kreole. Have you looked at the security cameras from the non-VIP areas? Surely, they had to pass through to get out of the building?

Well... The thief probably couldn't afford a laptop anyway. You just "leveled the playing field" by providing a laptop to some poor, unfortunate, soul. The government was going to give the guy one anyway to go with his free cell phone. You just donated the laptop directly without getting taxed first. Oops... you're going to end up buying a 2nd one for some other poor guy at tax time. Sorry...

I can relate to your grief. Several years ago I had a hard drive failure on my home PC and lost a bunch of video's and pictures. I was somewhat lucky in that I was able to recover most of the files. It took me weeks to recover everything. I had to re-rip hours and hours of analog video and re-scan hundreds of negatives and recover files from back up CD's and old computers that were in pieces in my basement. After that experience I purchased redundant hard drives for my PC and added an external hard drive from Seagate that came with "autobackup" memeo software. Now everything on my PC is automatically backed up to an external drive.

My wife told me a story a few weeks ago about a home break-in where a couple lost their PC equipment. The wife was working on her doctorate and she lost everything! After hearing that I decided that I need another backup that I could move off site or hide it somewhere in my house.

Ironically, I just ordered another external hard drive this morning (before reading this post) which I am going to use to create 2nd back-up of my files. I am going to run cables from my office to a room in my basement and hide the hard drive. If someone does break in to my house and steal my PC equipment, I am hoping that they are not going to go tracing wires through the floor.

I hope you get lucky and it turns up. My guess is that it was an inside job or that someone ditched it when you made the announcement. It might still be in the club.

I'm sorry about your Mac.....
I'm in the audio visual business where 99% of the time my equipment is in a hotel, convention center or restaurant. Fortunately I've lost very little in the last 15 years but I will say this...a laptop is the first thing that will walk. When ever I'm in a situation that I have to leave a laptop at a venue that won't be picked up until the next day I make certain that the manager knows to lock it up in their office when the client is through using it.
I don't rent to bars for this very reason. Plus the bars always want to pay in chicken wings........

I have a little program that emails me when the IP on my computer changes. I take it everywhere and I like to keep tabs of what IP's i've been on in case weird stuff happens. This would be a good way to catch them in the future.

Sorry to hear about the Mac. On the next one, and for everybody else with a Mac, I'd suggest setting up an Open Firmware password. Here is some discussion:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352

The only way they can get the data off the drive once you do that would be to physically remove the thing. Meanwhile, it will render the computer a piece of junk to anybody who doesn't have the password. Not completely, but almost.

Thanks guys for all your support, I'm pretty much over it now. I've contacted I-Tunes to disable the account and change the password also. I guess Santa's gonna bring me a new MacBook and short of having a Kryptonite lock on it and hanging around my neck, I'm gonna watch that puppy more carefully. I didn't keep any of the finances on it so I'm not too concerned. Well if the thief wants to, he/she will be able to chat on CSR and GCOffshore cuz I was always logged on to the sites.
