stereo aux input

Yup, turns out I got the XMD1 so I guess I'll get the soldering iron out and start messing around. (gulp)

I just replaced my XMD3 with a CMD5.

I will sell my XMD3 for $50 plus shipping if interested. I just haven't gotten around to listing it somewhere. It is in perfect shape and has front/rear/aux RCA connectors. No messing around this way.

Let me know if interested.

I didn't bother soldering - just used crimp on butt connectors. As long as you read everything carefully, it is quite easy. If you reuse the changer DIN cable like I did, you'll need to use an Ohm meter to find the correct wires. But they are pretty obvious once you find them (the sound wires - left, right, and two grounds - are wrapped in silver foil). Then you'll just need to locate the two wires used to turn on the ACCY mode.
It seemed daunting at first, but turned out to be a quick, pleasant job. Much nicer than having to install a new head - which probably means installing a new remote on the dash - which in my case would be a pain in the arse (routing the wiring from my Sirius box at the helm down to the stereo head was not a pleasant job)...

Good luck.

I made the mod on the xmd1 but ultimately repalced with an XMD3 on my pontoon. i recommend you take the deal offered above. You could sell your xmd1 for most of that cost.

I am not exactly sure which version of Clarion I have, but I have an 06 320 and it is hooked up to the 6 disc CD changer, and Sirius. I do have an AUX plug in next to the corner closet, but when I plug in my Ipod via the femal audio plug, I get nothing :smt089. I unscrewed the back of the plug (in the closet) and it is definitly connected to a wire. I have not yet check if it actually connects to the back of the radio.

How do I get to the back of the Clarion radio? Maybe I just missing some setting on the radio to get the AUX to work?

Thanks,

Same for me. I'm curious what the solution is.

I just learned that KEC DVD player must be turned on and set to AUX for the game port to send sound to the TV's. (and possibly the clarion stereo) I haven't been back to the boat yet to try it, but I wonder of that IPOD jack is somehow wired into one of the DVD players just like the game port.

To hear what is being input thru the aux jack, you need to do the same thing you would to switch from radio to say CD Changer. On older units you press the power button to cycle thru your options. IE Radio>>CD>>CD CHanger>>Sirius>>AUX>>Radio. Some of the newest units have buttons for the inputs. On an '06 which is probably an '05 model Clarion. Make sure the ipod is connected to the jack and the volume of the ipod is up. Turn on the Clarion and keep tapping power until you see AUX. If you don't see it at all, it is not connected to the back of the receiver. On my CMD3, I see the AUX input even when nothing is playing. Hope that helps. Dan

Sorry if that was confusing.

All you do is plug it in and press power a couple of times to put the radio in AUX mode.

Just as simple as trying to set your fm transmitter to a clear channel but with much better sound.

That is not the problem. I had it set on AUX (shows AUX in the display). Moved the volume up on Ipod and radio and still nothing. Maybe you can select the AUX input power somehow. Can't check until next week.

Yes, there is an AUX sensitivity setting that you can adjust.

Just another idea, are you using an Apple brand Ipod or another type of MP3 player? I have a Zune by microsoft and found out by trial and error you need an adapter or a different cable to to use this jack. That would explain why you hear nothing.

I could not find any adjustment on the actual radio to control the input volume.

I noticed that all the wires run into the Amp where the vacuum is. I have not yet taken the radio out of the wall to check the wiring in the back (next week)

So I still have no AUX sound... I just can't belive there is an easy solution for this.

I found the Aux sensitivity setting after playing with the menu button. I changed it from Med to HIGH by turning the volume knob and still don't get any sound. I suspect that the AUX cable coming from the jack is not plugged into the correct RCA jacks on the back of the radio. I'm not sure what it is plugged in to. I'm going to plug one of these into one of the 2 sets of available RCA jacks not being used on the back of the radio. My understanding is that one set of plugs is an output for an amp and the other is an input for AUX. I will have to experiment since I don't know which is which. One set is very short coming out of the back of the radio and the other set is part of the wire cluster.

If that works, then I know that the issue is between the jack and the radio.

This is the installation manual for the unit:

I believe the aux input are the 2 wires that are both red coming out of the back of the unit. I had to stick my camera in to take this picture since I couldnt see them, just feel them. They were capped, but I took the caps off.

OK. I am up and running. I am sitting on my boat listening to music from IPOD as I write this.

I connected the monster cable pictured above directly into the two RCA jack (also pictured above) and Waa Laa... I have music. So.. it appears that the little jack on side of my cabinet is plugged into something else. I have no idea what it is plugged into, but it is not connected to the AUX input cables on the back of my radio.

My next step is to run my cable up to the helm so I can control the IPOD when driving. Having the IPOD sit downstairs in the cabin is a nice idea when I am hanging out on the boat, but it is not very practical when I am driving.

If anyone can tell me what the jack in the cabin is connected too, please let me know either in this post or send me a PM.

There's only one AUX input to the radio. Were there little rubber caps on the ends of your red AUX input cables? If not then perhaps the cables from the cabinet jack fell off. Or were never properly connected in the first place (this has been known to happen).

I got lucky and have a DVD player that has a pass-through AUX input. I run my iPod input cable to the DVD's AUX input. I then run the DVD's line-level output to the AUX input on the Clarion. When it's off the DVD player automatically passes the signal through. Works nicely and I get both sources capable of being played through the speakers.

I've used a Griffin AirClick RF remote to control the iPod from the helm. I prefer not to expose the iPod to water. I looked at getting something like an waterproof Otterbox to house the iPod at the helm. But figured it wasn't worth the expense and hassle once I tried using the AirClick. In actuality though I've found it's less hassle to just use Sirius satellite radio instead. It's just easier to let someone else do the DJ work instead of having to keep fiddling with the iPod.

The RCA jacks (pictured above) that I plugged into were capped. (I stated that in the original post) I removed the caps and plug my cable and it worked. So I have no idea what the jack in the cabin is plugged into.

I decided that having the IPOD down in the cabin was not ideal. I removed the side speaker housing next to the helm and drilled a small hole in the bulkhead next to the wire housing that was coming up from the cabin. I was able to snake my cable up into that compartment and then drilled another small hole in the plastic housing that holds the speaker and ran the cable up. I had just enough cable to allow me to pick up the IPOD and change songs while driving and I can keep the IPOD charged with the 12 volt power under the steering wheel.

I used it all weekend and was happy not to have to listen to never ending commercials followed by "shorty's burning up the dance floor" and Lady Gag-ga wanting to take a ride on myt disco stick.

I'm a happy camper:smt038

You inspired me to yank my radio out this weekend and hook an old iPod into the stereo, works good except on my radio, there isn't an aux selection on the radio, it just works whether I have it on radio or cd. If I tune it to a radio station, I hear both the radio and the iPod. Weird.

Thanks, that is my plan for now as well. By the way, do you have the amp in bottom where the Vac. is? It looks like there is a RCA cable going in, but maybe it is the speakers going out. The other cable is some kind of multiple wire plug thingy which I think has to come directly from the radio. I have to check.

Also, did you activate your Sirius? I cant find the sirius ID on the radio display to activate the service.

Thanks,
