Well,, I have begun the upholstery work. I am pleased with how modular and easy these boats are to take all the panels out of. Everything is philips head stainless and not glassed in. Most of the classics I tend to are all glassed together. I managed to get about 75% of what I needed out in just 2 or 3 Hr's This will allow me to remove all the headliner and keep the shape for a pattern for the new vinyl interior.

Heather,
You are having far too much fun - demoing that boat- let me know if you do anything with the slidung windows (seals etc)
I have a 1981 SRV 245 and have to replace the Plexiglas on one side, Looks like I have to unscrew the whole frame to get it out..
keep taking lot's of foto's as you progress.
Jim

I am,,,
After some thought, I am going to remove them. Glass there openings into hull, match paint to the gel coat and make that area solid and cut new elliptical lexan portholes and get rid of the sliders all together...

We pretty much finished clearing all the fabric, carpet and stinky stuff today. It's on to Montgomery to find some nice interior materials. Still not sure what I want to do. It may be a few days before I update this part.

You are doing a great job. Don't forget to video the install of the new carpet and headliner.

Looks like you have everything there to work with. Just some clean up and updates.

Good luck

Oh, I shall. I am in and out of the boat tonight as this Hurricane / Tropical storm passes over to mark all my leaks. That one by the window is the only one I see. I am trying to decide what materials and colours I want to replace it with.

I like it the way it is but it's pretty much a clean slate and ones mind wonders at the possibility.

I'm really intersted in how the portholes turn out..
let me know how you remove the windows...
Keep having fun ,,,
Jim

Well from what see so far, They are screwedin. Along the bottom there is a runner of wood. I think this is becasue it could be hidden. Along the top the same but just into the fiberglass.

As far as removing the cabin windows, #1 I don't like how they look, I don't feel they match the potential lines of the boat. #2 there are no windows in the forward berth. This will correct this and keep the windows all the same style.

All that I am going to do is make a backing panel with a release agent, feather the outside and lay up a bunch of chop mat, smooth it and have paint matched to the cleaned and buffed but faded gel coat. "It's cheaper than matching gel coat." Then have our local glass place cut me some elliptical tinted lexan panels and install them with old school rubber window gasket. I think 4 to cover the original span of the windows and one more forward into the berth about mid way... Much like the newer boats have.

But I shall take photos and video for you to see how they come apart. :smt001

I feel like a idiot LOL.

I was trying to clean the wood panels from the cabin and was getting nowhere. It was only after a close look I relies the lamination is not a real wood veneer but a fake formica lamination. Dhooooo!:smt013:smt021:smt009

Sorry if this question has been answered before (I really did search first) but how did you remove the "monkey fur" and the floor carpet? I would love to replace both on my vintage 260 but it looks like the glue that Searay used in those days was some of the strongest stuff around. I don't want to spend all winter picking this off one inch at a time.

Heather,
Sounds like you have it all under control - I want to see how you do it and how it turns out - I might do the same.
Just keep moving along and show us the fotos'.
Thanx
Jim

We didn't have that problem on this 82. The headliner came off by just tugging at a seams and then just working it back. The carpet took a bit more pull but it also came up without much effort. Some tatters were left but you need to use a paint scraper to remove those areas that are stubborn.

If yours is that hard to get off, I'm not sure what to tell you to do, I am NOT an upholsterer by trade.

Great job and thanks for sharing. Will be removing the carpet in my 82 260SD over the Thanksgiving holidays to check a soft spot on the floor in front of the galley. Did you notice any damage on the floor area?

Yes, If you go back and watch the You Tube posting you will see it. The leaks from the side windows works it's way to the bottom. Under my couch was my rot.

OK, came up with 35 Yards of vinyl to do the boat. I am looking at some with the foam backing.

What kind of headliner are you going to use? Also, i wonder if you can paint those wood panel walls, would the paint stick? Good work, and great sharing them with us.

Spookeay –

Question, what kind of motor-mount are you thinking of using for that one house motor?

And on a serious note, I have an’89 340 I’m kind of doing the same thing to. I found most of my leaks were from the bow rail stanchions (overhead), port lights, (Port holes in forward berth) and from my rub rail. Mostly the rub rail, once it was removed you could see that where the hull and deck were brought together there was significant void. I would hate to see all your hard work be ruined once you were back in the water. Something to think about.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

If i can make one suggestion it would be to wash all of the inside with javex (were a resperator) don
