I've noticed as late that the starboard engine on our 2004 280DA( 4.3 fuel-injected, alpha1) will not idle once it reaches operating temp. This is particularly vexing during docking.

Is there anything that I do can to resolve this problem simply and without spending a for another service call this month?

Thanks

Hi< fuel injected engines have a iddle valve that controls the RPMs, get it checked as it might be faulty.

Idle Air Controller (IAC). About $110, 5 minutes to change.

Thanks. I'll give the IAC replacement a try tomorrow. My wife has multiple outtings planned for the weekend so I'm going to be (back) in doghouse if I don't get this resolved.

I replaced the IAC and everything seemed fine....for awhile. The starboard engine idled fine until we got close to the dock and then it decided to shutoff and not to re-start.

in that case you might have a wire contact problem as it seems that you moved something that let it work for a while, i will check the wires now

It seems likes it's working now for the most part. The boat can actually sense when I'm doing a 180 turn to begin my docking procedure to immediately shut off the starboard engine but only intermittently. Oh well.

One thing that has been left out here is the IAC Muffler. If they get clogged (and they will if not changed) can cause these types of problems as well. See this thread for a breakout and location. The IAC muffler is about $1 See post #8 here- http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/36072-Impeller-IAC

The fact that it is better after the IAC replacement but not fixed suggests the possibility that a clogged muffler needs to be replaced as well. The muffler getting clogged restricts air flow to the IAC. Merc Part number 35-863829 . It is a piece of foam about the size of a sugar cube. It is compressed and inserted where the IAC passage connects. You will see this in the breakout diagram in the link I posted.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I did replace the muffler.

This is as much a question as a possible answer. Does this system have a water temperature sensor that switches the system from start mode to run mode?
