St. Clair points of interest

I completely understand and of course I am courteous when other boats, especially small sailboats are present. However, they could have better indications of no-wake zones. Those that are not familiar and are following charts are unaware of these zones. Every other place I've been had no-wake buoys clearly marking low speed zones. I did a quick google search and found a lot of people boarded and/or ticketed in these areas just because they were not aware. Also, if this is such a frequent problem, US Coast Guard should have informed me of no-wake zones while boarded and ideally hand out a map showing such zones. Did not receive any information from them.

I am now informed and know what places to be careful about.

mfilippa,

Agreed that there should be better markings. I only know, having learned from folks who boat there frequently. Basically, there's a "red can" in front of Bayview Yacht Club where you need to come off plane. Before you do, know what's behind you, and make sure you come off plane slowly, so others that are unaware, don't end up on your swim platform. I went through there with my 10 y.o. son one evening, came off plane, and had two off-shores barrel through at wot right when we sat down.

Thanks for the pointer on the red can. I didn't know exactly where to come off plane.

Let’s see...

Lots of places to go, to name a few:

1) Poor Mans out in Front of Mac & Ray Harbor / Belle Maer Harbor. Water is real warm 70-75 degrees and if you stay to the Belle Maer Side the bottom is nicer, more sand less clay.
2) Muskamoot Bay. Stay close to the light houses and head on into the bay. Watch you depth and you will be fine, I Make this run in a 33 Dancer and there are much bigger boats that make their way in there.
3) Browns on Harsens Island for Good Food. Located on the Middle Channel about halfway up on the south side. Watch for the shallows just outside the channel (reference you chart or GPS).
4) Tin Fish, good Food and Dollar days Mon, Tue,Thur, northern most tip of Anchor Bay. Look for the white water tower.
5) Crew Inn, another sopt for good food located up the Clinton River (20 minutes, north side)
6) Couple places up the North Channel, Decker’s Landing and Algonac Harbor Club.

Should be a good start.
Good stuff! Might also add LSCN.net

The best parts of the Detroit River are in the lower half, south of the city and industry. However, if unfamiliar with the area, a chartplotter is damn near a must. Several splitting and converging channels can be confusing. Many places look wide open, but are far from deep. From my well in Ecorse, for example, looking across the river, there are 3 deep channels with 2 shallows in between. It's not difficult, but a plotter takes all the guess work out of it. Much more fun that way!

Here i am thinking i am the only one from Michigan Harbor on this site and i come accrost this thread, great to see some other people on here that are close by in the water, and I am the one that is actually drulling over both your boats expecially the 33 by the gas docks i am sure i look at it everytime i am over there getting one of the best burgers on the lake. Anyways it was obviosly a bit late in the season but if you haven't tryed the spots in gross pointe (just before gross pointe yacht club and futher down between the next two marinas) they make for great swiming spots when you want to save gas or have little time. Both go from 10-3 ft very quickly so be careful going in but it allows you to either stay in the deep or get to the shallows for swimming and kids. The only down fall i would say to the locations is that on busy weekend they can be ruff and the boat constatly moving can get annoying after awhile, other than that i am thinking everyone pretty much covered the good spots around the lake, oh other than if you have kids or large groups that want to meet up you can anchor just off the beach of memorial park this gives you full access to the beach, water park for the kids and the bath houses.

I was down there the other day and hit the shallow part. Caught me by surprise. Luckily I just raised my outdrives and slowly moved out. I'm the first 330 boat just passed the covered wells before the gas dock.

everyone has mentioned alot of the places i also frequent...

i have a 390 express and make it too all the shallow water places you were concerned about, but like they said keep a close eye on your depth

im from the north part of anchor bay, actually bouvier bay, theres a hangout called munchies that is real nice, warm water and sandy bottom

and there is a restaurant called bobby macs that has good food too with quite a few docks......

skillz, I share your sentiment. It was awesome stubling across this thread and seeing locals....
Wonder if we shoudl start a local subgroup or something ....
Have a great weekend folks!

That's probably true....but the folks I work with in Monroe even complain how nasty the water is south of Detroit and the west end of Lake Erie.....
I count my blessings I get to live where I do....bring on the big blue....

No doubt LSC is nicer, but the Detroit River is far from nasty. After all, it all just came from LSC. lol

Of course, neither can hold a candle to Huron.

I think the Detroit River and Erie would be fine....it's what's upstreams that mucks it up - Detroit.
And we all know that "blank" flows downstream.....:smt043

I've long wanted to shut off the pumps on 696, M-10 to 96 and turn Detroit into something like Alcatraz... or "Escape from New York" - the drain it puts on this state hurts everyone.....but I am off point.

So - next spring where shall we meet?

If you mean on Lake St. Clair... Let's see if we have the same LSC lingo...

I like the Moot until it gets too busy, either by the Culvert, the Turn Around, or the Hook. Poor Man's is good, but I really like overnighting in Goose (except for the bugs!). The water is nice and clear in the SNI and Baltimore Hwy. Of course, some time at Gull is a must, although I now always have the feeling I'm being watched.

Can you believe I didn't go to Browns all year??? :wow:

(Your plan for Detroit seems to be happening all on it own. :smt101)
