Hey guys,

I had a local stereo shop (also does marine stereos) a block away from my house do the speaker install on my boat. I was given a great price to do the installation as the owner knows a very good friend of mine.

The speakers are 7.7 JL audio and the amp, Rockford Fosgate P400/2 was mounted inside the cabinet.

The sounds is an unbelievable upgrade from stock. I still have my stock speakers. In the near future, I will be adding a subwoofer. The owner has given me few places where I can install the sub.

Here are the pics.

I have just one little problem that I am trying to figure out. I ran my power and ground to my battery. However, when I select battery 1 or 2, my amp still turns on when I turn on the stereo.

The install looks great! The amp turns on when you turn the stereo on because of the remote turn on (blue) from stereo to the amp. This is how it knows it has signal from the stereo. If you are concerned about it running the battery down, just put a toggle on it. BTW those JL's can handle everything that Rockford will dish out by themselves without so much as a snap, crakle or pop. My advice as you have done go BIG amp and best quality speakers. Always overpower never underpower speakers. The speakers will perform much more efficiently. I would add more JL's to the factory spots and power them with a 4 channel amp and use that 400 and bridge it mono for a sub. Good luck, once again it looks good.

Very nice, you will love the sound of the JL speakers :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks Kurt, I can't take the credit as I got that set up from you. You are right, it definitely sounds GREAT! As for getting another set of JL's for the factory spots, I was already thinking about that and the owner of the install shop was recommending that. Once I save up some few more benjamins, I will go ahead and do that. Should I get the same JL 7.7 or swap out for 6.5?

Looks nice. When you open the engine hatch I assume your starboard one's not in the way?

Todd, no it does not get in the way. We made sure that the right placement would not get in the way when the hatch is opened.

I also wanted to add that after Saturday, the sound system was unbelievable out on the water. However, I am not so sure about the placement of the amp being in the cabinet. After 4 hours of continuous use it went into thermal mode. I had to open the cabinet to allow it to cool down for 1 hour. Next time, I will leave the cabinet open and I am going to try to rig up a cooling fan to place in the cabinet while the amp is being used.

Your install looks very clean. For your over heating amp problem Alpine makes marine equipment now. It's what I'm going to use when I do the system on my boat. I have their PDX amps in my car and they don't run hot at all. I even installed three of them in a mostly enclosed enclosure in the side of a trunk and the guy hasn't had any problems with them, even after running the system at deafening levels for hours at shows!

I'm new to boating so can anyone tell me if there's a general Coast Guard rule about sound levels on the water?
