I have watched the price on this 400DA continue to drop.

Per the broker, "he replace the Starboard engine one of the injectors came loose and put a hole in the piston, and instead of just replacing the piston and sleeve he put a new engine in he still had the old engine. he has put a lot of upgrades on the boat since he has owned it The boat shows very well and I thing you would be very happy with it. The reason he is sell at such a low price he has a deal going on a new house and if the house deals does not go through he will keep the boat and raise the price, so he has motivation at this time which would save you a lot of money. "

The boat looks great, in photos. So what is wrong with it?

Why doesn there have to be anything wrong with it?

Maybe it is just as the broker's statement indicates. There are more than one boat offered and its need to be sold is dictated by the current Florida real estate market. This might be THE one.

But one must wonder about the prior use if the boat has already needed new carpet and upholstery.

You will never know until you go look at the boat and you won't know for sure until you do your due diligence with mechancial and hull surveys.

There does not have to be anything wrong with it, just "feels" odd compared to all the others I see on the internet.

Does what the broker state about the engine make sense, seem inline?

I guess I am hoping to hear from someone who has already looked at this one. I recall a thread a while back where someone was asking about a boat and a CSR member replied stating he inspected the boat and it was in very bad shape.

You never know......the guy is building a house and the lenders are not taking the chances they were a few months ago. Maybe his lender said "Nope" when he called for the next progress payment on his construction loan. If he needs to raise money quick, cutting the price on a major asset he has for sale gets people talking and looking.

I may be wrong, but this one may be a real value....................

The prospective buyer backed out for an unknown reason though.

Most marine surveyors won't offer an opinion on the engines. At the very least, any offer you make ought to be contingent on you're taking a sample of the oil from each engine to a dealer and getting an oil analysis done. This is very cheap insurance.

There was a point in time when the 3116 was a disastrous engine. I don't recall when as I stopped looking for diesels. Make sure the engine does not fall into that category. 20 knot cruise is slow for that boat. Barker gets ~23 to 24 cruise and ~27-28WOT. That begs the question is it propped correctly?

Nice boat. You gonna own two? Must be nice to be wealthy.

Other than the radar arch, what differences will I see between a 1999 400 and a 2000 410?

There are many different motivations for private parties and dealers to sell boats. My 420 had been sitting at a Tiara dealer for 9 months-the carrying costs were adding up, the Tiara dealer had just been sold to new ownership, and the previous owner of the dealership was on the hook to move all the used inventory. He simply wanted it gone. I was the beneficiary of this situation.
I really think that a lot of folks who leveraged home equity loans or equivalent instruments to buy boats of many different types and sizes are now feeling the pinch. Dealers are not immune-I am betting Marinemax is dealing now. My dealer has a "new" 07 52DB with a ton of options and MAN power (referred to by the local Cummins tech as MAN-grenades, as a humorous side note). If I understand Sea Ray model year releases correctly, In July 08 the '09s will be out and that '07 will now be a two year old "new" boat. perhaps a deal to be had. If only it were white hulled with Cummins power--

Skip...with your moving up in boats...you can get white on the one after the DB...:lol:

Jeff,
If I move up to the 52DB before McCain's second term I will also be living aboard the darned thing, as my wife will divorce me and take the house and kids.

I have reached the maximum effective range of my wife's patience for my boat insanity, and will thus happily rack up the hours on the 420 for some time to come.

I agree...since you are not buying the 52DB..you can spend more on gas or should I say diesel..right??:grin:

Very easy with whats wrong with this boat. Boats are not selling. The survey MAY just have been an easy out for the buyer.

Do your own due deligence. Don't the trust the seller or the broker.

Nobody would spend $2,000 on a survey and then walk away from a boat that just needs a battery!

Let's face it, the survey come up with a problem...

If they have nothing to hide, they should have no problem disclosing who the previous interested party was. Give them a call and speak with them directly.

Nope...that one is way way outside normal business ethics for this type of transaction. What he discovered for his $2000 and why he voided the deal are his business and you have no right to ask for any specifics about his deal.

There may be nothing at all wrong with the boat that caused the deal to fall apart......owner financing, wife issues, etc, etc.
