Silverton

Lance,
I am a big fan of the 460 DA with a hard top. I don't know what your price point is but, if you can swing it the 460 is sure to fill your needs for a while!!

Do yourself a favor and find one or 2 Silvertons in your area that are 5 years older than your boat and go look at them. There is no comparison in how well the gelcoat and interiors hold up. If that doesn't convince you, then go look at a 10 year old Silverton, if you can find one, and compare it to a 10 year old Sea Ray.

Frank, Can you elaborate on what it is that makes the gelcoat so different between these two manufactures? How about any other manufactures like Regal for example?

As always, thanks for taking the time to post.

I ownwed a 86 silverton 40 convertible .Nice boat solid as a rock .She was very clean after we worked on it for two seasons, lots of room in the bilge.Wish i still had it but she got it in the divorce.had 970 hrs on it with no troubles at all when it left me in 2005.I took it as far as new york for vacation from detroit.Caught some 12 ft waves on the way home in lake erie, she did well but it was tough on me to be on the bridge,i hurt for days afterwards.

I owned a Silverton 43MY for a few years. Really nothing bad to say about the boat. It had a tremendous amount of room both topside and in the interior and was quite stable in the sea states I took her out in, albeit never in the ocean. As has been implied earlier, wind around the docks can be a problem. Most all the installed equipment seemed to be the same brands as Sea Ray installs except it had macerator heads and I would stay away from them. The 43 actually had lots of storage compartments placed most everywhere. I didn't have any problems with gel coat fading since the boat was pretty new but I've no reason to doubt the testimony of one who has seem them age in the Florida sun. There is a great amount of canvas to contend with so you need to be ready to deal with that; topside became a very hot box in the sun where I boad and I would expect that area to likely be very uncomfortable during the day most of your season in Florida. Since Silverton for some reason tends to under-number it's boats with respect to length (the 43 was over 47' LOA and I believe the 35MY is about 40' long) I would commend the Sea Ray 390/40MY to you as being nearly the same size you are considering. It has the interior space but not the bridge area but that's offset for me by the hardtop and windshield. AC on the bridge, which most, but not all have makes it comfortable all the time. We prefer aft cabin boats (I once had a Maxxum and you don't want to go there) and think we found the best trade-off in this model.

Thanks Al and 56olds, still just feeling out what our needs vs wants (LOL) are gonna be. Thanks for the advice.

Here's my opinion on silvertons...
Pro
nice boats, tons of room, very roomy
Con
Stairs,stairs,more stairs...

Seems for a Retirement boat that they are not practicle. I have met many people with these boats and that is always the issue. I've seen mostly younger couples (not degrading you or anyone else Lance) and when asked that is there gripe that the climbing around wares them out... keep us posted no matter what you do...

Silvertons have a "soft" gelcoat. They don't hold a shine well. I buffed a late 90's Silverton once, and literally within two weeks it was starting to fade again after 2 coats of wax! I've never been so disappointed in my life. Also, there's a 392 on my dock, and I once stood on the dock and pushed up on the molded bow pulpit and was able to deflect it nearly two inches......ROCK SOLID!!!!!!(sarcasm). A friend had a 33 for a year, before that he had a 29 Formula. He was never satisfied with the Silverton. He always commented on how things were cheap on it compared to his bird. It had twin 496 HO Crusaders and only went in the low 30's. He was extremely disappointed with the speed. He sold the boat within a year and bought a 40' Formula that he's now very satisfied with.

Ok you guys have just about talked me out of a silverton.... But I appreciate all your comments!!

And if I didn't have this 280, I'd probably go buy Russ 370, I like the way he cares for his boat, kinda like me!! :)

Dont get talked out of it!!! You are on a searay site!! You could always buy my boat........Go on silverton site and ask the same questions and you will get different answers...

I'm biased and I admit it, stick with Sea Ray.
I also think (although I don't know for sure) that you might be happier with a larger Sundancer, particularly when it relates to handling.
I went from a twin engine 270 to my 350 and could not be more pleased with the space and the room that we have.
My recommendation is to go to the largest DA that you are comfortable with, but let us all know what you wind up doing.
It's -23 degrees C this morning, I am dying for boating news.

My wife and I kinda like the stairs, nice railing to grab onto also. Getting in and out of the 280 at certain docks sucks too, and those sorry-ass cabin sliding doors, someone should be shot over those damn things, my 97 250 had those also, they sucked too, LOL Dont get me wrong, I love SR, but they're not the only good game in town. :)
