Should you buy a gun or not?

His second point was not carrying with an empty chamber.

And no, I don’t agree with depending on being able to rack like that, although I can do it I choose not to have to.

I agree with the first point, but disagree on the second. You can rack a slide single handed if you practice by snagging the rear sight on the holster, belt or belt buckle, etc and just push away. If you have a red dot mounted it’s even easier, there’s enough to jamb against your body. These are basic defensive skills for dealing with an incapacitated hand or arm.

You have been watching too many James Bond movies.

All this is state specific. In indiana they don't carry the weight of law. They can ask you to leave (for any reason) and if you don't you can be trespassed. Simple as that, unless you're in a state where no gun signs carry the weight of law...
Same with PA. I carry in malls and movie theaters here all the time although there are usually signs saying no weapons. The one theater we go to there was a young kid there one night with a duffle bag full of guns. Luckily they have a police officer stationed inside on weekends and he saw him. The kid ducked into the bathroom and the officer followed him in and arrested him. IIRC the guns were stolen and he was going in to watch The Purge.

This place is about 1 mile from our marina

Actually I have trained this exact scenario at firearms training and became pretty proficient with it but there are scenarios where that might not be possible. I would catch my rear sight on the top of the holster and rack the slide

I will disagree with that all day long. I even ordered mine without the safety.
safety has nothing to do with it. neither of mine have safeties and i can rack my slide on my holster. actually haven't tried it with my M&P Shield and that has a very tight recoil spring so might be pretty hard with it but i have done it with my Glock several times (like hundreds)

I had an instructor that could rack single handed as quick as quick as with two, pretty cool to watch. I'm not quite there yet.

Its fucking beyond me why people would consider performing an Immediate Action Drill at the beginning of a gunfight.

Carry your fucking gun ready to rock and roll or stop fucking pretending to be competent.

Pete, you gotta quit beating around the bush and just say what you mean.:D

You don't understand...it's the noise made when racking the slide that scares the bad guys;)

I purposely bought my M&P Shield with no safety just so there is one less step to take if the crap hits the fan. But I had also carried Glocks for years on duty so was used to no safety (no the Glock trigger does not count as a safety)

As I assume most have, my 1911A1 has a combination of both grip and thumb safety. With the thumb safety off/hot, I have purposely attempted to override the grip safety (with an empty chamber, of course) by pulling for all I was worth, and it would not drop the hammer without squeezing the grip safety. Since part of the practiced routine is to have the trigger finger away from the trigger until bearing down on the target, I'm fully confident the pistol can be safely carried with the chamber hot. That would eliminate one step in the unwanted event where I had to pull my piece.

Sig Sauer Academy, Epping NH: Handgun 103 introduces the concept of using the the non dominant hand while the dominant is incapacitated. The next course in the series Handgun 104, builds on that with additional drills such as drawing from a holster using the non dominant hand as well as improving marksmanship skills shooting single handed with the non dominant. And finally you can take One Handed Pistol Operator and spend a whole day doing crazy chit with a handgun. I’ve taken these courses and learned to do it.

There are certain advantages to being left-handed; in a right-hander's world, you learn to do most everything with your non-dominate hand.

That is a quote for an anti gun politician. “Get yourself a double barrel shotgun” Joe comes to mind.
